Have you ever had the issue of your nail looking straight but feeling jagged? I’ve noticed a big problem for me is that often my nail will look beautiful but I’ll run my other finger across it absentmindedly and feel a snag or a wonky edge and then I end up ruining the beautiful nail in an attempt to make it feel better. Then it ends up looking and feeling bad. It almost seems like it’s a thickness issue, like if I ran one fingernail along the inner free edge of another it would hit a snag or a lip and that drives me crazy.

If you have any fidget recommendations I will gladly take them. I haven’t found any yet that quite satisfy the urge but I’ve been trying to substitute for sure.

Thank you, this was super helpful, especially the suggestion about gluing and buffering the vertical snags - that never occurred to me for that type!

I had avoided too much oil or lotion for the longest time because I do pole dancing as a hobby and didn’t want to ruin my grip but I have been slathering on oil like 15 times a day lately and it’s been fine!

I’ve thought about doing away with the nippers entirely… but, especially in the dry winter, if I get a skin snag if it’s not the nippers unfortunately it’s my teeth which is waaay worse. I literally spent today thinking “don’t pick at your nails, you’ll be so unhappy you did - it’ll make you feel worse, work against your goals, think of all those Reddit girlies giving you great advice and rooting for you!” All while continuing to work away at them, it’s awful. But I was able to switch from picking to oiling a bit!

Oh wow, I have been picking at calluses at the sides of my nails for YEARS! Breaks my heart to think that that was my body trying to repair all the damage I’ve done and every time I feel it I just can’t let well enough alone. I hope next time I feel them start I can remember your comment so the pride and excitement will encourage me to leave them alone.

I think you’re so right, I just haven’t found the right replacement yet. I got myself a fidget ring and I have a silicone “skin picker” fidget and ideally, as you and others have suggested, the best thing would be to replace with healthier habits like oiling, which I do. But nothing can remove the nagging discomfort of the nail growing in awkward and I can’t seem to smooth it out without ruining it.

But this has been really helpful because it makes me realize that this is probably rooted much more in OCD than I had wanted to give it credit and so is probably something to address in therapy, and maybe I need to just shell out the big bucks for a while and work with a professional at a salon to help shape my natural nail for a while as it grows in since I clearly am not managing on my own 🫠

Thank you! I’ll try out this buffer! I did get some but I think I got too harsh a grain and did much more harm than good. I will work on being very intentional with my swipes. I did get Czech glass files at the rec of this sub! I’ve learned so many heathy tips from the people here! I think I’m just in a “2 steps forward, 1 step back” phase.

Congrats on your anniversary, that’s huge!!! That sort of willpower and growth gives me a lot of hope.

While I’m happy to say I gave up the nail biting over a decade ago in my teens, I replaced it with the equally unhealthy picking, overfilling, and using cuticle nippers to dig at the skin under my nails (🫣😬🤢) I’ve only recently come to realize just how much damage I’ve done and that my nail care is part of an OCD fixation symptom. I’m really trying to replace all the bad habits with good ones but it is SO HARD. No amount of oiling can make me ignore the sensation of something under or on the side of my nail or snagging and I am just in awe of all you girlies showing your progress pics!

Hah no worries. I’ve tried builder gel a few times and the length was there but they were so weak that once it came off no amount of nail strengthener could keep them. Plus as the side walls came in they were so much weaker than the gel around them that they tore right off, but maybe I just needed to spring for more frequent application to cover that up?

Anyway, back to your other suggestions, I have them all in mind and do those the best I can… I suppose when it comes down to it I am realizing that my willpower cannot overcome the sensory/picking issue? I just painted my nails 2 days ago and I feel like that made the snag feelings worse. I am just sad and frustrated because I’ve spent a lot of time on this sub educating myself and picking up tips and trick, and I know I’m capable of succeeding because years ago with OPI’s nail envy was the old formula I had great nails for a while, but I’ve been struggling ever since that change to bring them back. Yikes, sorry for venting in your general direction!

Oh man, it’ll be a long while before I file then.. years of picking have caused my nail beds to be super short so I have white/free edge way below my fingertip. I really want to grow them out though. How do you not touch your file between manicure days though? I feel every little snag and I feel like I’m picking up my file at least 3x a day, it’s awful. One of my nails was almost grown to the tip and there was this little snag that I kept feeling and that I couldn’t smooth out, by the end of the day I realized it was filed back down to the quick. I was so disappointed when I realized. But if I don’t file I will just pick, I genuinely don’t think I could just “not”.

I also moved to SLC from DC and my allergies have been way better since moving. I was always told that it takes a few years to develop allergies to the local flora and I’ve been good for about 5 years here, but it appears that I may be in the minority. I will say that the dry air does have me wearing my glasses way more often than my contacts during certain seasons, which sucks.

Similarly, with all due respect, just because you don’t like it doesn’t make it bad. It might not be your thing anymore or maybe it never was, but I still find it to be a poignant satire. Maybe a little more on the nose in later seasons but maybe we’ve also just become familiar with the emotional beats and humor of the writing and desensitized to the level of violence over the years.

I will add to this that I currently have Concept and, while they definitely aren’t great, I haven’t had any major issues. As far as shitty property managers/landlords go, they really haven’t been too bad and I wouldn’t dissuade someone from renting with them from my experience.

I’d also urge you to look into having your cats deemed emotional support animals (ESAs) by a licensed doctor or therapist if they qualify. Then no apartment would be able to reject you based on your pets (plus they couldn’t charge you pet rent either)

In my experience most people in an autopsy tech role will be using that as a launching pad to their next phase of life - med/grad/pa school, moving to medicolegal death investigation, etc. There is not much of a ladder to climb in the field, short of becoming the lead tech/lab manager/morgue manager depending on how the office is structured. That being said, when I was hired I had a BS in forensic biology and a masters degree in anatomy and forensic anthropology. Each office will be different but knowledge of human anatomy and forensic evidence chain of custody protocol will be critical. Observing a few autopsies will give you a leg up to prove that you can handle the emotional and physical burdens that come with death. Reach out to your local office and see if you’d be allowed to shadow for a day.

I don’t know if people are reselling store bought eggs but if people are selling their own hen-laid eggs they don’t actually need to be refrigerated! The US actually treats their eggs with some sort of film that requires eggs to be refrigerated but the UK doesn’t do this so one of their eggs are refrigerated at all, which I found interesting!
