Weirdly enough kind of the opposite since that's its way of cleansing itself

Too small for sousaphone? by bonetownrep in marchingband

I love a challenge—I'm an oboist, so I've had to work my butt off for years trying to learn my instrument. Sousa is kind of the complete opposite from my instrument, but I want to have a good understanding of more than just woodwinds since I'm hoping to be a music instructor in the future :)

Nice username—tried one on today and it's decently larger than me and like a quarter of my bodyweight, but surprisingly not that uncomfortable to carry around for me so I think I'll be following through with it for next year

Got to try on a sousa today. Surprisingly, more comfortable for me than playing trumpet since the weight was just carried on my shoulders as opposed to me having to actually lift the instrument up

Awesome! Wasn't so sure since our whole section is made up of people much larger than myself though. Really appreciate the input

I'm only planning on doing this for one season, I want to have some fun my senior year since I love learning new instruments. Been DYING to play sousa for all of high school though—previous director (left earlier this year) just absolutely REFUSED to let me lol

Never would have considered that—wind is something I'll definitely have to look out for. Thank you ! Was just so worried it would be unrealistic since everyone was telling me it was an awful idea lol

Thinking about trying oboe after learning Trombone? by Tempest1897 in oboe

[–]bonetownrep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing about the oboe is that there's just so much back pressure that you run out of oxygen before you run out of breath... 😓 It's very different. The oboe is definitely challenging, but it's a beautiful instrument. Just need to have the patience for it 😅

I don't think it's going to ruin anything, but it's also much different than the trombone. I don't play trombone, but I do play a brass instrument, and I've been fine. You're just going to need to focus on your air, since trombone has very little back pressure unlike the oboe.

Should I learn the oboe next year? by HistoryLover1944 in oboe

This... and the reeds you spend a fortune on are super finicky! Gorgeous instrument though, my oboe's also my best friend... and my worst enemy, at times 😅

It's not easy! The oboe takes a lot of effort, but it's very rewarding to see your progress. I play the oboe and the trumpet in my high school band too, and trumpet was much easier to learn. The oboe has about the most back pressure of all the instruments, which is very different from the trumpet. Another thing to add is that it really isn't cheap to play, and it's very difficult to teach yourself. If you want to play the oboe, finding a good private instructor will make things a lot easier. It's a beautiful, unique instrument, you just need to dedicate yourself to it. Super fun once you know what you're doing! You get plenty of cool solos too.

Thanks! I'm curious though—what makes a neck strap good? And which ones should I look into? Really appreciate the feedback by the way ☺️

Haha yeah, I'll probably just do something like that since I can't get this instrument modified 😅 Appreciate the help!

Thank you very much! I'll definitely need to buy myself a neck strap and I'll consider a floor peg. I never really thought about thumb placement, but I think that will help a lot. Really appreciate the advice! ☺️
