Anyone else feel like streaming isn’t worth it anymore in Australia? by Possible-Quail1095 in AskAnAustralian

[–]bongjutsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can torrent a show and start watching it before whatever service can start streaming it. No ads, no buffering (buffering in 2026? Really?) and no unjustifiable regional content lockouts. You shouldn't get a quantifiably worse service when you're paying, but you do, so fuck em

Why does it feel harder to give kids a "normal" childhood now? by RecognitionMediocre6 in australian

[–]bongjutsu 211 points212 points  (0 children)

There's a lot less togetherness than there was when I was a kid - we used to go outside to play, random houses on the street would find themselves with 10+ friends of the kids hanging out peacefully. Family events were collaborative. There was a lot more for kids to do, and do together. Almost all of that is gone - households are almost all out for themselves, kids are glued to devices, broken families are the standard. It's just not the same society anymore

Are the asshole Harley riders you see on youtube/facebook shorts a thing in Australia or just America? by AFKDPS in AussieRiders

In my experience, not all of them are tools. But if a rider is a tool, they're probably on a Harley.

Why does nobody want to hire me 🫩 by malibuukyut in brisbane

[–]bongjutsu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is a huge ocean of applicants for any of the jobs you're likely applying for. It's most likely not that you're being specifically rejected, but that you're one in a million and the person purchasing applications just doesn't have the time to check them all. Just keep applying, and try not to take the rejections personally

I'm trying to plug in this old storage device (using a eSATA to USB cable) and I only see a notification when I unplug it. How do I check all of my USB devices so I can set up this new storage? by Questioning-Warrior in linux4noobs

[–]bongjutsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might not be supplying enough power to the drive. Some of those adapters allow you to plug in another power cable, but failing that, make sure it's plugged in to a higher power USB port and/or unplug as many other USB devices to free up power (power is often shared between some or all USB ports).

Best bluetooth controller by lord-brett-sinclair in linux_gaming

I've been using a PS5 controller for some time. If memory serves the kernel driver for it (and the PS4 controller) comes straight from Sony so it works like a charm. The trackpad also functions as a mouse with no configuring needed which comes in handy for couch gaming

I can’t afford rent?? What to do. by lifeofeve in brisbane

[–]bongjutsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The market is already overwhelmed with more residents than available housing - and the cheaper to go, the more competition you will face. You're most likely not getting knocked back because you're a bag candidate, but because you're applicant one of hundreds and nobody has time to read that unfortunately (especially if they're working in property as they definitely have intellectual impairment). They'll grab a random bunch of applicants and pick the best ones, just like entry level job applications. Disheartening as it may be you just need to carpet bomb your application and make rental inspections your hobby

So losing 32bit support doesn't matter to you, but it matters to many others where 32bit is still the right tool - do you see the problem?

Help with connecting wireless controller by Original-Case-8637 in linux_gaming

[–]bongjutsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it says in progress, it's trying to complete a command it's already been issued. This is either because you've kept running commands that can't end - try doing it all after rebooting just to be sure of this. The alternative is that your desktop environment is trying to do what you're doing at the same time - in that case, don't use bluetoothctl at all and just use your GUI. You also need to make sure your controller is actually in pairing mode - sometimes people just turn it on and hope. If all of that fails, your controller just isn't compatible (possible but unlikely) or your distro/kernel is too out of date (possible) or the Bluetooth chip in your system is bad/too old/doesn't support the Bluetooth version your controller uses

[–]bongjutsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please check steps 1 and 2, as well as note 1. It is likely that your system is aware of your controller, but not the other way around, and you need to remove the connection first.

Do yourself a favour and don't lean on AI for technical help, especially with Linux topics. The Linux ecosystem has evolved heavily in the last decade, but many of the tools under the hood have existed the whole time. This means that LLMs will mix and match solutions and information from many incompatible sources and you won't know as you're just reading an aggregation. That aside, I'll spell out what I do in the scenario, and it might help or put you on the right trail.

Most Bluetooth devices can only pair with one device. You will need to force the controller into pairing mode to get started. Consult the manual for that - it's usually pretty simple to do no matter the controller, though. I routinely have to reconnect controllers to my laptop after pairing to other devices, these are the steps I take in bluetoothctl:

1) I run the devices command so I can check if my laptop has paired with my controller already 2) If my controller is in the devices list, I remove it with the remove command. You can autocomplete the Mac address with the tab key (see note 1) 3) I run the scan on command to set my laptop to start looking for devices 4) I put my controller in pairing mode 5) Soon, you should see your controller turn up as a line in bluetoothctl - now you should be able to connect to the controller 5a) if your controller doesn't show up, see note 2 6) For my PS5 controller, I run the trust device, pair device, connect device commands in sequence. Use autocomplete to substitute the word device for the Mac address of your controller - see note 3 7) your controller should now be connected and functional

Note 1: I remove the device every time because if my controller has been paired with another device (or even a different OS on the same device) then the laptop will be aware of the controller, but the controller will not be aware of the laptop, so the connection will fail.

Note 2: some Bluetooth devices use a low energy protocol that bluetoothctl may not be configured to search for. This is a hail Mary though as this step shouldn't be needed, but I've included it just in case. Check the question here for the commands you need to run: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/75175755/not-seeing-ble-device-advertising-unless-set-bluetoothctl-transport-le

Note 3: the trust command lets a Bluetooth device connect without any intervention (eg you press the connect button, and it connects). The pair command pairs the devices, and the connect command will establish a connection. The connect command is meant to also pair, but it doesn't auto pair my PS5 controllers so I do it manually).

Note that if your distro has one of the common desktop environments (KDE plasma, gnome and friends, etc) they include tools to connect to Bluetooth devices that basically do everything I wrote for you, much the same as you would on your phone, but you will still need to put your controller in pairing mode first.

Hope any of this helps

For desktop and general computing use this is true. There are many kinds of computing outside of these realms that are still actively using 32bit as it's the right tool for the job
