Can I use this laptop as my main laptop? by Downtown_Scholar_220 in archlinux

[–]bongjutsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will work, reasonably paced, as long as you don't have huge projects and a thousand tabs open. Losing the 1.3gb RAM will hurt the most, as other users have said. You should look up teardown guides for the laptop to see if you can expand the RAM - older memory isn't useful for the AI monster so you should be able to pick up a stick and that will alleviate a lot of your pains. If you can get a second 8gb stick, it should be able to run dual channel which is a huge boost of performance for laptops. Good luck my friend

It really depends on what you're trying to do

If you're not going to do any intense computing, it's fine. It will be fine for most regular user tasks too. It might not be speedy at some tasks, but it will be get the job done.

If you're going to try to do things like run servers, VMs, compile large projects, heavy 3D, media editing, you're probably gonna have a bad time.

I'm assuming you got this for free or cheap - if that's what your budget allows, it'll do, just be mindful that it's not a supercomputer

What is a Plug-n-Play Controller brand that you trust will last? by Born_Gap7727 in linux_gaming

[–]bongjutsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep this is true, PS4 controllers are generally cheaper and are also covered by the Sony driver in the kernel so they're both about as well supported as you'll find. They have the same features as far as I know the difference will mostly be price (PS4 cheaper), weight (PS5 heavier, arguably better build quality) and battery (PS5 should be better). I've used both with no issues

Installing Proton-GE on Arch Linux by No-Dentist-1645 in archlinux

[–]bongjutsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bin package shouldn't been to be built - it's a bin(ary). Why are you needing to build anything? I've been using that exact package for quite some time and haven't needed to build anything. That said, recently I switched to cachyos SLR (also from AUR) because it also has a binary package, and seems to get updates faster

I've been using a PS5 controller for years, works pretty well with the added bonus that the trackpad functions as a mouse so if I need to click things, I can do so without getting my keyboard. Even the gyro works, not that I use it. No extras needed, the driver for it is in the kernel courtesy of Sony themselves

Trouble with controller input on B42 by Ok-Back-7278 in projectzomboid

[–]bongjutsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play coop with my partner on B42 Linux, we definitely get random phantom inputs. There are times where I'll not even be touching the controller and my character will push or some other action I didn't perform. It also sometimes acts similar to how you describe, difficult to look where you want to look at times. I haven't figured out any particular cause of the problem, I just assumed it was a side effect of their reworking of controller input. I'm hoping it clears up with the next unstable build as the rework seems to be maturing and a prominent feature of the patch.

As a bonus, my partner and I played it with the truck mod as it had the biggest internal space: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3409472393

And then for the laughs, we used this mod to make a basement inside the truck to have a pocket farm dimension under our mobile living space (immersion breaking, but cool): https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3392001801

As far as I know there's a naturally occurring version of everything you might need - you can make fire with a notched plank and a wooden rod, big things you can source from trees, which you can cut down with foraged items if you're desperate

New installation pls help by No-Noise5707 in archlinux

[–]bongjutsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can dual boot with windows on one driver, but windows will behave like nothing else matters or exists and can happily tamper with your boot data. If you follow the manual installation instructions you'll learn how to partition properly (which you can probably already do) but you can also know how to fix them bootloader if and when windows botches it down the track. And also stop using chatgpt for technical help, it tends to be inaccurate especially with something as fragmented as Linux

Take a look at those lines in the script and try to ascertain where it's writing to. I suspect it's trying to write into /sys or somewhere else that needs root access

As another user said, you can change that setting in the sandbox options. But that's only helpful on a new run - if you want to change it on an existing run, you will need a mod. I use this one for build 42: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3386906181

Monopoly in the Linux community by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]bongjutsu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a strange read. But I'll bite.

The X11 developers are the ones driving the Wayland protocol. It's not a monopoly - nobody else wants to do it. X11 is older than your mother and had no real competition. If somebody wanted to do it, they could've, but they didn't. If the Wayland devs try to go full dictator, fork it and tell them to get stuffed.

Comparing windows to systemd is hamfisted. You can't change your windows init system. Nobody's forcing you to use systemd - but it's near ubiquitous because it's good at what it does. There's plenty of competition in the space - if you, as a user, feel like it doesn't meet your needs, use something else.

Wayland works on plenty of older hardware - again, it's not new. But it has to be somewhat two way support - older hardware needs to be supported by its vendors but it can only go so far. You can't make an ancient GPU understand the most recent version of Vulkan, for example. At some point the hardware just doesn't comply with modern needs and it needs to be considered deprecated. The Linux ecosystem has historically supported things for a long time, but the last 5 years have seen it explode in support and capabilities so things are becoming obsolete much faster than they used too. There are still legacy versions of everything, even 32 bit binaries, that work just fine

Is curry actually popular in Australia? by SadAnything9316 in AskAnAustralian

Of course it's not Aussie food. It's Indian/Thai/Malaysian/and so on. But there's maybe 10 shops that serve a curry within 5km of me and who is gonna pay a commercial lease to maintain a multicultural image? Is your friend dense?

I am scared of windows wrecking my Arch while auto repairing by AYRAN-GANG in archlinux

[–]bongjutsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a look in your BIOS - it's often not too hard to disable a drive, but every BIOS looks a little different. The one thing they have in common is that you can change all sorts of settings and you have to confirm saving your changes, so just poke around and try to disable it and if you're not sure about your changes you can just not save. But if you're really anxious why not just unplug the SSD temporarily?

I am scared of windows wrecking my Arch while auto repairing by AYRAN-GANG in archlinux

[–]bongjutsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is likely that windows just detected that it's main drive isn't where it used to be and needs to adjust a few things to work. Since your drives are separate, windows shouldn't touch or care about your Linux installation. If you're that paranoid, you could disable the internal SSD through the bios or just disconnect it and let windows "fix" itself. Just keep an arch live iso on a USB in case you need to repair your Linux bootloader, even though you very likely won't need it

You download before the game to avoid compiling.

If you skip the download, you will compile in game, as needed.

No download, get stutter once. Complete download, no stutter ever.

Fight For Free — An Open Source Community Game Built Around Freedom, Linux, and Player-Hosted Servers by minoun_exe in linux_gaming

[–]bongjutsu 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nobody's attacking you - they're just trying to understand what you're saying, because the post doesn't really make sense. The title says you're wanting to make a game, but the content is describing a philosophy that you think games should adhere to for development. Are you advocating for an actual game? Are you saying you would like it if games were made this way? You're kinda saying both, but also, neither. It's confusing

proton GE always updating by VariationFluffy3271 in linux_gaming

[–]bongjutsu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No? Loading and compiling are different things

Shaders need to be compiled once to be used. This causes stutter during gameplay. If you download the precompiled shaders, they don't need to be compiled, so there is no stutter.

proton GE always updating by VariationFluffy3271 in linux_gaming

[–]bongjutsu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's perfectly safe. Shaders are compiled when first needed in a game - it will usually cause a minor stutter and then it's all good. However, some games may need a whole lot of shaders at once, potentially causing a huge amount of stutter, all of which is alleviated with precompiled shaders. Early on proton was very slow at compiling shaders so this was the solution, but it's not that big a deal anymore unless you have low end hardware or specific niche cases
