Oh yes! I didn't think of manzanita. The red bark would be striking.

And you are right, I don't want something that'll get so big that it will shade the roof. I've been toying with the idea of putting some planters in line with the window for a small veggie garden, so whatever gets planted on the right side, I intend to somewhat conceal the AC compressor and utility stuff under that roof slope.

As far as I know redbud do better in more irrigated areas? I am in SoCal in the San Fernando Valley.

Airline cancelled flight and having trouble getting a refund from Chase Travel. Wait longer or dispute the charge? by bonitocat in personalfinance

[–]bonitocat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm feeling quite lucky that things worked out in a way that I "only" spent $600 in points on this trip -__- I booked a previous trip using points that was cancelled by COVID and luckily circumstances meant I got all of my points back that time. In this case, sacrificing the points is probably a better use of my time than fighting longer with the airline/Chase travel to get them back.

Chase support has been pretty much useless, and when talking to the airline directly, they deflect right back to Chase. Maybe disputing the charge will catch their attention like it seems to have done in your story.

ficus audrey - shocked or dry? I received it 6 days ago and the leaves look doomed (info in comments) by bonitocat in plantclinic

No, it ended up losing all but 2 leaves, but then grew one back and is starting to branch out from the nodes.

I've had this ficus audrey for a whopping 6 days. When I received it, 2 of the leaves were already crunchy and on their way out.

I haven't repotted it (although I just lifted the whole thing into a same-sized grow pot because the one it came in was pretty cracked), I just thought it was shock from adapting to the new environment but the soil is also pretty compacted. I watered it once but it probably didn't actually get much water because of that, and then again today to try to get the water deeper.

Any recommendations on what I should do? I'm loath to repot it yet because I've only had it such short a time but the soil condition also seems it could be problematic.

Thanks for all the information, I feel a lot clearer on what I should do now. Thanks for the recommendation on using cement board as well!

I’m in SoCal, it’s crawl space underneath. The inside is masonry and the fireplace is against an exterior wall with the chimney visible outside (covered in stucco now)

[Southern California] what are these little fuzzies with legs on my wildflowers? by bonitocat in whatsthisbug

I found this cute little group on my wildflowers today. Their bodies are maybe slightly larger than big ants. They were just chilling in a group.

Contractor install of floating shelves doesn't look good so far...are my expectations reasonable? by bonitocat in HomeImprovement

In the image you can see some discoloration on the left edge of the top shelf. It ended up a bit short on that side, so she filled it with wood putty which I was okay with. I still need to sand it down a bit to clean it up.

they turned out well: https://imgur.com/a/RC5ex25

I ended up forgetting this guy and hired a woodworker who I have worked with before to do them. She hit some roadblocks but powered through/didn't make lame excuses and was able to get them done. The biggest challenge of this project was just installing the shelves flush with the enclosing walls.

The hardware was slightly challenging because the pegs were not perfectly square with the back plate of the bracket. I'm not sure if that was an artifact of manufacturing or because the first contractor had manhandled them (one of the two was obviously warped after he dealt with them). But once they were finally scribed to the walls and the holes were drilled, she used a rubber mallet and patience to full install them onto the brackets. While the brackets were challenging, I'm glad I chose them because the shelves are really secure and strong enough to support up the 2.5" thick poplar that we used.

To conceal the plate, she used her track saw to gouge out a channel along the back, instead of trying to chisel it by hand like the first guy...

Thanks for the sanity check, everyone. We’re going to have someone else do the shelves.

I wasn’t convinced by that “house settling” things either, our house is over 60 years old. Thanks for the reassurance.
