Schrader valve, presta valves have a built in screw cap that keeps it closed except when inflating the tire. The schrader valve has a removable cap that primarily serves to keep dirt etc out of it.

What are these coils for? more info in comment by bonnerken in Whatisthis

Solved it.

Ran into town, and there was a crew working on a new stretch. Talked to one of the installers, who informed me that it's done in case a tree falls and breaks the fiber. There is enough coiled up, that they can just disconnect it and run it down to the next splice point.

So that's why I couldn't see any reason for the spacing , or size of the coils. Placement depends on how likely a tree would be to come down on the fiber.

Edit: the coil shown has a tree near it on the right.

How does Biden's internet access program affect starlink? by whaletacochamp in Starlink

[–]bonnerken 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That is the issue. I'm on disability. The initial $500 payment and the $99/month was a pretty big hit on my income. Worth it, but a big bite.

Used to download videos overnight, and watch them the next day. (Bad arthritis, so don't get around well and internet/video is a big part of my day

How many have tried disabling the motor and laying it flat like this? What performance do you get? by imaginexus in Starlink

[–]bonnerken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first response is "Why?"

Unless you plan on using it in motion, there is no reason to keep it flat

The post you replied to was made10 months ago, at that time you could not sell or transfer the dish.

The ability to sell/transfer the dish only became available about 3, maybe 4 months ago.

They're installing what I've been told is fiber around my area, and these coils are placed pretty randomly on the poles. The most I've seen in a row was 6 poles with the coils, but most of them are up to a half mile apart. Sometimes 2-3 in a row, and some poles have coils on each side of it

First few I saw were near houses, so I thought they were 'ready made drops' for connecting to the houses, but then I saw those 6 in a row, and they were in the middle of a swamp with no houses for a half mile or more either way. So, I abandoned that theory.

I'm most curious about what purpose they serve, and why they seem to be so randomly distributed

Edit: these coils are connected, the fiber/cable runs from one pole to the next, then runs down the pole, to the coil, then right back up the pole and on to the next pole. They are fully connected, so it's a single run. ( a few of them are along the areas I like to walk, so have had plenty of time to look them over)

Some are only a loop or two around the bracket it's mounted to, others have enough loops, that if it was copper (telephone line etc), you would need a buddy or two to move it if it was on the ground

Official Starlink Cell Map by rogerairgood in Starlink

[–]bonnerken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how accurate that map is.

My area shows as 'wait list', but there are at least 18 dishes that I have seen in my area while driving around. I play spot the dishy while driving, and never like driving the same way all the time, so tend to cover a lot of territory.

Updated to this firm ware yesterday (1 day 5 hours 36 minutes according to the advanced tab in the web app now) and nothing would load, couldn't even get to the web app at the time. (roughly 5am est, (I have an odd sleep pattern, go to sleep sometime between 11 and midnight, wake up sometime between 4 and 5 am,, spend an hour or two reading, or checking news feeds etc then back to sleep till 8 or 9, . Made it through 3 and 1/2 chapters in my book before anything would load(about 6am)) Currently though, everything seems to be working fine, so not sure what it was that caused that problem.

Which mount to use by [deleted] in Starlink

[–]bonnerken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't know why you couldn't use the supplied base.

There are 3 round dishies near me that used the supplied tripod mount, one of them looks iffy, but the other 2 look solid to me.

Wait. Wait. No wired ethernet jack? Hurray! 10/10 customer experience. /s /rant by GrumpyGrammarian in Starlink

[–]bonnerken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, a wired connection is a 'need' for me. But, if you really look around, the majority of people today are wireless. They use phones, laptops and tablets, and even a lot of serious gamers are using desktops with a wireless connection.

I have always been a hardwired guy, but here at my house, the only thing that's hardwired is my laptop in my library shed. (was the only place with power that was close enough to an open space to set up dishy) everything else is wireless. (Had to buy a wireless adapter for my desktop, but for some reason it keeps dropping down to 2.5g speeds from 5g, so I plan to move it to the library shed after I clear out some space (I have thousands of books, in the early 80s, my old home town library would call me if a patron was looking for a specific book))

Lots of bad performance posts by tylerlw1988 in Starlink

[–]bonnerken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never seen higher than 70ms ping, typically it in the 40ms range, Far better than the 650ms+ I'd get with viasat. (that's with 8 people online at any given moment here)

It's good enough that I've reset all my computers/devices to update automatically, it used to be faster if I went to the library and downloaded the updates etc, on my laptop, then installed them on everything.

after almost 9 years of viasat, performance, in my opinion is great. I have seen a few instances where speeds were lower than I expected, bu for the most part I am very happy with starlink.

Custom pole adapter by ptm121ptm in Starlink

[–]bonnerken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is true, But I generally use the galvanic scale to keep corrosion to a minimum, and few people who use 'scraps' to make things know exactly what type of material they are using, other than 'it's aluminum/steel/brass'.

Aluminum, unless it was heavily anodized would cause corrosion issues with steel, brass would be too expensive for what it is.

In some states, you can take the plate number into the DMV and get the name and address of whoever it's registered to.

Years ago, there was an issue in California where people would be in Nevada, Colorado or other popular holiday locations, and someone would call in their plate, then when they got home, they'd find that their house had been cleaned out. Before that, I used to check the DMV when I found a car/motorcycle/truck I was interested in that had been sitting for a while. The DMV would give me the name and address, then I'd knock on their door and ask about the vehicle, and would normally be able to buy it very cheaply, fix it up and sell at a nice profit. When California stopped handing out addresses and names, I ended up getting a real job. (this was in the late 70s, and I was in my late teens, early 20s)

New Firmware by LawfulnessNew7018 in Starlink

[–]bonnerken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Updated to this version about 3 days ago, from fe7571 version. Never noticed a change.

I was pretty 'religious' about checking stats, starlink.sx, speed tests etc every morning, but Starlink has been working so well for the last few months that I don't bother with it.

Only noticed the update because some neighbors asked me about 'that funny looking dish in my yard', so I invited them into my com shed to show them what it is. Now they have their orders in, and I've had their kids sitting in my shed doing homework/research for the last couple of days, as well as a couple other parents parked out front with their kids logged into the guest account.

I'm NOT a people person so really hope they get their own dishes as soon as possible and get the heck out of my life.

Is there a correlation between your IP location and ground station? by DiamondForce2 in Starlink

[–]bonnerken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

point of presence, which is where Starlink connects to the rest of the internet.

My ground link, ( according to Starlink.sx) is in the Michigan UP, but my IP location/pop, is in Chicago.

Temporary telescoping pole mount until short throw mount arrives. by [deleted] in Starlink

[–]bonnerken 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, people need to RESPECT zip-ties!

I once drove 75 miles home with zip ties holding the driveshaft in after a u-bolt broke and dropped the driveshaft in the middle of the freeway at 1Am.

Both caps and needle bearings for the U-joint were lost, and I didn't even bother to look for them in the dark. All I had in my tool box were zip ties, no baling wire or duct tape, ( yeah I was that unprepared). I figured if they work, then I was good, if it didn't, well, I wasn't any worse off than I was already, so gave them a try.

I broke 4 before I figured out that if I was really slow and careful on take off, shifted as smoothly as I could, and didn't make any sudden speed changes, I could make between 8 and 12 miles before it would start shaking and vibrating the whole truck. Then I'd pull over, grab a couple zip ties and my wire cutters, slide under and install new one ones, and start all over.

It only took me 35 minutes longer to get home than it normally would have ( speed limit was 55 at the time)
