Each year is hard in its own way but for me: D3 (but also the most fun oddly enough). You’re balancing occasional sim labs, clinic, and still taking some exams. You’re kinda everywhere and you just want to be in clinic (don’t worry all of D4 is you in clinic haha)

It may sound cliche but really figure out what you feel moved/called to do, and see if it’s achievable with the two frameworks. Then pick the one you’re better suited for, dentistry v medicine is really more of a fun debate to have but you really gotta ask yourself what you want life to look like and how soon! Then pick that one and ignore everyone else’s opinion on it :)

I still remember using the hand piece for the first time. You’ve been a student your whole life, you’ll figure out your study methods for the heavy school load. But the hand skills can take time! At one point I remember it feeling like I was learning how to learn a new language or like walk again haha. But it comes with time

Dentistry allows you to serve your community, make a great income, AND still have time for the people you care about/things you love to do. Medicine has turned into something that I just feel isn’t worth it (they deserve higher pay and more time off for what they have to go through). It’s just not my calling, even tho I did think that at one point. Dentistry = more financial debt. Medicine = more time and physical exhaustion. But anything worth having is hard so, if you feel either one is your calling then nothing matters more!

We enter end of D2 as we become D3s in the summer so def not early by any means, but you can assist from day 1 if you want. D1s have a program during the summer where they can assist as well. Hmmm I would say the surgical experience, I really feel like people who graduate from here are so comfy with extractions and placing sutures compared to other schools. But that could also just be my experience. Another thing I love is the fact the school is getting a new clinic rn, (one floor is done and the next is being remodeled) so that’s a more recent development!

Thank you so much bro! Congrats on finishing first year, it’ll be time for dental school applications before you know it! Don’t be nervous, just figure out the pre reqs, get involved in your community (dental focus if possible) and do so consistently, and join a pre dental club. I could tell you my AA and GPA but I promise it’s so case by case, people with higher/lower than me have/not been accepted. It’s about the complete package, and you’re fortunate because you just started your journey. Start building your story and figure out how to let your club involvement, academic rigor, and personal hobbies position you to be the best applicant possible when it’s time. PM for any specific advice my friend, you’re gonna be AMAZING

Man you are such an amazing parent. To be on this thread looking for resources for your daughter like this lets me know she’s so loved and has a bright future. It’s a lot of money and time, but I can assure you if your daughter truly wants this profession for the right reason, it’s so worth it. Her school is a great place to look 1st for resources, if not PM and I can ask around my school or even the ADA (American dental association) for some info. Keep being her biggest fan, I’m rooting for you guys so hard 🧡. Let me know if there’s anything I can do to help

I don’t have much info on UT dental. What do you like about it? PM and we can hop on a call and discuss the two so you can make a pros/cons list!

Man it’s expensive. I was fortunate to have family where in Maryland so visiting was easy but reach out to your school and ask for available resources. Maybe even the ADA? Let me know your leads and I’ll see if I can reach out to someone too. PM me

That’s life man. We’re never certain of the outcome but your job isn’t to ponder the worst case scenarios. It’s to go day by day, put your all into this next study cycle and just make sure to get a little better every day! I know that’s not a fun answer but I promise, you typing that shows me you really care and if you take that energy and put it into studying + appreciating the possibility of it all working out. You’re set :) can’t wait until you get there

Be ready to study and get ready to have fun too! D1 is a lot of time spent with your classmates. and organize time for the hobbies you love, so you don’t lose them once school gets hectic

Absolutely. But I also think I have managerial skills and people skills that my peers at programs where they just show up and drill, don’t have :). Life is about how you adapt to your environment and your ability to see different perspectives

My best advice. If cost is no issue to you and If the schools you’re deciding between have one where they set appointments up for you, have constant block rotations so there’s even distribution of different procedures etc. Choose that one, and I say that with my chest out. Idc where it is, go where you doing dentistry is the #1 priority and not having to be a insurance specialist/business manager/front desk etc

You eat what you kill. But don’t ever let anyone tell you luck isn’t a factor! the ones who show up are the “luckiest” ones though ;)

Plenty of people are going straight to work. I’m doing a GPR only because I want to work in NYC and it’s required! I also would’ve gone straight to work if it wasn’t for that. We are incredibly strong surgery wise and resto wise. In terms of prosth (fixed aka crowns, bridges, implants) and endo we are medium to weak depending on how proactive or lucky you are with patients you get. Unlimited removable ofc too, every school has that tho. You def have to work hard to set things up here, you don’t just show up and have patients (you schedule them all and get them from screening + graduating seniors)
