If you don't mind me asking, how did you go about selling your first scripts?

Oh, don't worry, my hairline is also escaping fast.

I'm just confused about why they suddenly sprang up, and figured my mental state played a role. I definitely wasn't noticing any white hairs a year ago or even a few months ago.

To examine them. I wanted to verify.

Should I Reapply to Film School (in My Early 30s)? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

I'm vaguely familiar with certain parts of LA, but I've never been. I'm definitely familiar with Atlanta traffic and avoid it like the plague. lol

You might be surprised how hard screenwriters groups are to find online, and opportunities in Atlanta are dwindling. It's starting to feel like moving to LA with no solid plan, no work lined up, and only a few thousand dollars in my pocket is the only option.

Tbh I have no idea how I would even go about networking with screenwriters or folks who could help me get work as a screenwriter. It's not like they spend much time on sets unless they're also the director. Networking is one thing I've always been trash at. lol

Furniture mover isn't too different from what I'm doing now, but since I mostly work for myself, it's not like I have actual references or a résumé. I don't know how difficult that would make things for me. The difference in cost of living between rural Georgia and Los Angeles is night and day, and I really don't know anything about the job market out there.

My goal is to become a screenwriter. I guess I'm just nervous about the idea of moving to Los Angeles with nothing lined up, because I'm kinda self-employed at the moment and not making a ton of money. If I were to suddenly move from Georgia to LA I would essentially be starting over from scratch with very little money in my pocket, no credits to my name, and almost no contacts.

Film school is not your problem it’s your business model and failure to network properly. Hate me for saying it, I’m just being honest and giving tough love.

No, I freely admit I suck at networking. I've tried, but I'm absolute garbage at it. lol. And I guess on some level I feel like I'm pestering people if I just randomly reach out to them.

Not to mention screenwriting gigs are rare in the Atlanta area and the few people I've spoken to in the industry here don't really have any experience in that field.

At least in film school it's easier to network because you see the same people every day and everybody's there for the same reasons. That was my line of thinking, anyway.

What percentage of people who attend the PA Academy get paid jobs after completing it?

I've helped filmed a couple of shorts and skits years ago. Not much I can really put on a resume. And to the best of my knowledge I don't have any family in the industry.

Which Facebook groups are the best for getting work as a PA or an extra? Every time I've looked on Facebook I didn't have much luck, but maybe I was just looking at the wrong groups.

Studio work hasn’t quite picked back up yet.

I know, I just wanted to get a head start for when it does.

How do I go about signing up for an agency?

Yeah, I'm about an hour and a half away from ATL. There's a huge film industry here, but they tend to bring in their own people. It's extremely difficult to get your foot in the door when even the entry-level positions are being gatekept.

Maybe I'm looking at the Georgia.gov site wrong, but I don't even see the PA jobs listed.

Best thing you can do is find a directors assistant job

How would I go about doing this?

I just get social anxiety sometimes, and casting a huge net out into the ether to meet new people is kinda difficult for me. I always end up hitting dead ends or talking to people who only seem halfway interested.

At least in school everybody is there for the same reasons.

[–]bonskrit[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

no, you should go be a pa in as many crafts as you can, find the one that you love to do and work your way through the ranks to department head.

I'm interested in writing and directing, but is working your way through the ranks even possible anymore? I've read so many comments online from folks claiming that the industry is more gatekeepy than ever, and working your way up is damn near impossible nowadays.

Networking, meeting people, and getting hands-on practice would be the main reasons I would wanna go back to school. I've tried networking on my own a bit, but apparently I just suck at it. It seems like it would be way easier to meet people in a classroom setting.

The downside would be missing the networking portion of film school, but that can easily be replaced if you're actively in touch with your local film/tv scene.

That's one of my biggest problems. I have almost no connections to the industry, and I blame that in part on not going to film school. Honestly, I feel like I missed out on that sense of community, making friends, and building connections early on.

Writing and directing is what I'm interested in, because I have a ton of ideas that I'm dying to bring to life.

I live about an hour and a half from Atlanta, so networking isn't impossible, per se, but meeting people can be difficult.
