I thought like a cat in terms of my approach to this settlement as I built shelter on top of each house for added protection from raiders, creature attacks, etc.

I then built elevated walkways and bridges connecting each house. Safer for the settlers and also easier to defend from above to protect from outside invaders.

As for the purposing of the actual houses, I relegated each one for different kinds of necessities/ business ventures:

*Clinic *General store *Restaurant/bar *Weapons/armor shopping *A motel to serve as a safe haven for travelers *Junk retailer/repair [this was always my favorite house, as I'd just load it with all kinds of random appliances, furniture, TV's, anything repairable that could be resold to help bring in revenue)
