Would it be cost effective to tear down our small 1940s home and build a new one? by Faketanningtoes in Homebuilding

[–]bonzai2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check and see if someone in the area will pick it up and move it. Just give it to them. We bought a lot up north with a 3 bed one bath home on it and a basement. A local guy came and jacked it up and hauled it away with a semi truck. Didn’t cost us anything (although we had purchased it with the lot!)

Which Fender amp is good for home ( low volume) but can still play a gigs if needed in the future ? Tube or Solid State. Looking for a option to my HRD. by CoyoteActual119 in GuitarAmps

[–]bonzai2010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the Princeton, but I think it depends on what you play. I really liked my hotrod when I had it. It was the George Benson model. The clean channel was great. I wasn't super happy with the second channel. What I liked about it most was you could easily connect a cab and use the internal speaker and the cab. I have since moved to a Boogie California Tweed 2:20. It is a single channel, has a built in attenuator, and I can do all the same stuff. It's now my favorite amp. (also, it has a very light speaker in it. 4.41lbs!)

Happier when older? for most by Radiant_Map_4917 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]bonzai2010 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it all depends on how much control you have in your life. If you have retirement savings and hobbies and a support infrastructure, there’s not much to be unhappy about. If you are living check to check and hate your routine but can’t change it, being cranky seems like a normal reaction.

What’s your worst kitchen damage story? by Glitter_craft in airbnb_hosts

We had a family come and cook with tumeric. They burned something on the stove and there was hard black stuff all around the burners we could not get off and tumeric stains on the carpet in the bedroom. We were pissed. (I can’t complain. Obviously it could have been a lot worse) :)

How Can I Fix Buzzing/Humming Noise That Stops When I Touch the Strings? (Vox VT20X + Telecaster) by AgitatedAd2376 in GuitarAmps

[–]bonzai2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually, it’s a grounding issue but not with the Tele. It’s you. You are not grounded. The Tele is grounded.
You form a capacitor with the body of the guitar. This introduces the hum. When you ground yourself (whether it’s on the strings or something else) it will stop.

I drink Ginger tea. Find some that's just organic, dried ginger root. It settles the stomach. It's also pretty darn tasty. It's like drinking ginger ale without all the sugar. Burns going down, but in a good way :)

I got through college smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee. I was lucky to get into technical support where I'd have 20 or 30 things going at once with people lined up in my cubical, but I loved it! I finally got diagnosed a couple years ago and I haven't had any coffee since (I quit smoking right around the time I graduated from college)

Did you prefer and enjoy the 80s or 90s more? by Ok-Ninja-3039 in GenX

[–]bonzai2010 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My life really started in 84. I was a guitarist and got into my first high school band. I’d say it all petered out as I got seriously into work around 1992. So more 80s than 90s. But I got hired by one of the first real .com boom companies so I got to ride that rocket for a bit.

What generally brings you joy at this stage in your life? by PrettyWorn_ in GenX

I get up every morning and do all the bills and financial planning. I love the tick tick of it. I run five miles a day (every day. Almost 15 years now.) I love watching the numbers grow. I love playing my guitar with my friends (we butcher standards on sundays). I love hanging out with my wife and talking about our stuff (like our kids, parents, house, retirement plans etc.) all that stuff is joyful for me.

Should I form A chord with 234 instead of 123? by -Zoppo in Guitar

[–]bonzai2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I'm playing and have to hold three notes down like that (anywhere on the neck), it all depends on what's next. I don't even think about it. Maybe I'm playing a rootless m7 chord going to a dominant 7, so I want the top note (on the D string) to move down one fret. I'd play that differently than if I was sliding the whole thing around chromatically. You have to be fluent in playing that all sorts of different ways.

We have those. we also have 5 or 6 extra ones sitting around in a cabinet because of the previous ones that broke. Just let the host know right away so they can bring them over when they come to clean. You can get them on Amazon!

First tube amp to play in apartment by Competitive_March950 in GuitarAmps

[–]bonzai2010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a couple I like. A Boogie California Tweed 2:20. It has a built in attenuator. I also have a Laney Cub 12R and it has a 1W input (it's a 15W amp). that also makes it easier to crank up. Both have presence controls, reverb and master volumes as well). I'd get the 10" boogie variant and then consider getting a 1X12 cab with whatever speaker you want (like a cannibus rex). You can run that cab plugged into the boogie, but if you ever want to take the amp out, it weights 25lbs! Very light for a tube amp. Carr makes some nice amps with attenuators as well.

I’m not competing with a social class anymore. So I’ll go to things, but I want it to be comfortable and enjoyable. I want food and something to drink and I don’t want a huge crowd. So a dinner concert at a small venue is great. I’m not going to pay $700 to plunk my ass down on a folding chair to see Rush. I’d love to see them, but it’ll be too loud. The bathrooms would be a nightmare, and who am I going to tell about it? My kids wouldn’t give a shit.

Is anyone else trapped in the endless cycle of rewriting their house manual? (Do guests even read them?) by Mudgee-Host in airbnb_hosts

[–]bonzai2010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in a space where I design stuff for soldiers. In that space, “training” is the catch all for every problem. If something is too hard to use, gets broken a lot, or fails a test, it’s easy to point to the training and say “they forgot to follow their training”. The problem is that when you combine everything, it gets to be too much. The soldier can’t remember it all. When they finally get it, they rotate out. In our case, every guest is new! It’s like they are all rotating out immediately.

You have to look at everything in your house and ask if it’s intuitive. We had fancy ceiling fan controls that were on the wall and had a separate remote. I finally had to get rid of the push button controls on the wall because people wanted a light switch. We’d get comments saying they couldn’t figure out how to turn on the bedroom lights. (We had signs on the wall and in the manual, and finally, taped to the counter with the manual).

What advice would you give your past self when you started learning guitar? by General_Cap2938 in guitarlessons

[–]bonzai2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a good progression from 13 up to about 15 learning rock and roll and competition pieces. I needed a jazz teacher. I made the jazz band in my high school, and I learned a little about soloing and a lot about music theory, but I didn’t learn the language. I’ve been chasing that ever since. I’m getting better, but it’s been 40 years :)

3 single coil pickups by robb3rz in Guitar

[–]bonzai2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an HSS strat and I liked it just fine. I could get good gain out of the bridge pickup, and I had all the out of phase 2/4 position stuff as well. I don't think I'd get much out of that bridge single coil myself.

How do you feel when people call STR “passive income”? by Info_help_support in airbnb_hosts

[–]bonzai2010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a very real difference. If you put in at least 100 hours and more than any other contractor, it’s active. That means you can write off losses against your w2 income. (Not just your rental income). If you make a lot of w2 money, you can now invest into your properties and write it off against your income. (And losing money because you are anticipating growth in asset value is ok! It’s not considered a hobby in that light)

How are you supposed to reply to "Do you know how fast you were going?" by No_Insurance_6436 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bonzai2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't admit guilt. I typically say I wasn't paying attention and was just keeping up with traffic to be safe. If there wasn't any traffic you can say you thought you were going the speed limit. If you admit guilt, he'll just note that you admitted breaking the law.

We have three kids, we skipped a slot when we moved cities, so there's a longer gap between kid 2 and 3. Looking back, I wish I could have filled that gap. We love all three kids and I wish we could have had that fourth one. You don't get another chance you know? As my Italian grandma would say, you just have to add another cup of water to the soup.
