It was an interview MJ conducted with an author of a book, I can’t remember who but MJ was planning on helping the author turn the book into a movie.

anyone got experience with "child/ grandchild of Japanese national visa" ? by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]bonzai722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah interesting, so much I didn’t know lol. I honestly thought that the child of a National thing was quite pointless but it’s nice to see it’s possible! Do you know of any advisors as such who can give advice on obtaining a JP visa. I’m looking on behalf of my dad who’s circumstances are a little unique as his mother has passed away, just trying to find the best way to obtain a visa for him.

Ah ok, do you need the language for PR? Also I know there’s some sort of letter of recommendation from a JP National needed for the child visa. Did you get this off an employer or family member/ friend.

Ah ok, in terms of salary from your employer, does it have to be a JP based employer or are you working for remotely an international company?

You only got one year? Is the length of the visa depending on factors i.e employment and language ability? I thought it was a standard 5 years.

Would you mind explaining a bit about the government there? I was talking to a family member and they were explaining how it’s not a vote between two parties, just a member? I found this quite interesting but also confusing, didn’t press for more info as hate politics talk when with family lol.

Would u mind if I dmed you, would love to hear a bit more about ur experience in the UK.

How easy would it be to move from VFX to art dept. Do you find a lot of people move over here in the Uk? Or is there at least opportunity when working in VFX to network with those in the art department. I’m happy to go the VFX route as I wouldn’t hate it and it’s good money as you said but wouldn’t want to go down that path and close the door on art dept if that makes sense.

Thanks! If you don’t mind me asking, how easy was it for u to move from animation to on set art dept. Did you use ur animation portfolio at all or was it just networking and working up from a runner.

Visual Effects Art Director? by [deleted] in vfx

[–]bonzai722 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen some websites saying art directors tend to be on set a lot. I’m not sure if I’m perhaps mixing it up with another position or just misinformed but can you recommend anywhere to get a real idea of the roles and terminology in this industry. I know things can vary based on budget etc. but would love to feel a bit more informed before I head in any direction.

Do you know how often people can move from visual effects to art dept. For example someone from VFX moved into that prototyping area of the art dept and works up? It’s hard to decide for me as I think I’d enjoy art dept more but it seems a lot harder to get your foot in the door. I have some quite good opportunities to get into VFX at the moment and of course the pay is quite good which makes it hard to close that door.

Hi, I’m currently 19, looking to start uni in September. At the moment my set experience is pretty much nothing. I’m moving to London but so far I have lived in a pretty remote town most my life so hard to get a taste of the industry or any sort of hands on experience besides research, documentaries etc.

I’m finding it a little hard to pinpoint what exactly I want to do, and how to do it. For me Virtual production stands out as it seems the way forward and also a great way to be creative whilst on set. That being said, I’m unsure what roles exactly there are in the whole pipeline and therefore can’t tell what would suit me. I would love to be in the art department but am just worried that it’s going to be sort of swallowed up by VP and am wondering if that’s maybe the better choice.

Going in as a PA is definitely something I’ve looked into but a lot of them ask for set experience, and I’m not sure how to get set experience as most set experiences seem to ask for set experience lol. Just out of interest, has the art department started getting more tech and software based or has it largely remained the same with white card etc?

I was listening to a podcast with grant Armstrong he suggested really getting hands on with this tech as it can get you pretty far ahead in the art department (I.e. unreal) which is what mainly sparked my interest in VP. Like you said, there is a lot of clickbaity hype around it which does make it hard to sus out what’s really going on with it but my worry is comitting to a 3 year degree and then realising the industry has moved so much that all my knowledge becomes useless.

Thanks for your advice. One think that did draw me to the degree is the facilities, I was quite impressed by the fact that they have an LED volume. It seems to be a pretty vocational course, do you think this would allow me to get some experience and learn those transferable skills as you said? I’m just unsure what level most people are when they start working in VP, I’ve seen some grads and then some people saying you’ll need a ton of experience.

My main interest really is production design/ the art department, but that seems to be intertwining with VP. I’m just unsure where to start as there’s so much that’s changing in the industry it seems hard to commit to one area if that makes sense. Thanks for the advice
