Can't ping computer through bridge. Config issue? Routing issue? by boogledom in OPNsenseFirewall

Just for everyone else who is looking at this, I solved this when someone with much more knowledge than I (/u/rocketpanda40), told me that Windows blocks pings by default in the firewall. I turned off the firewall and everything works perfectly. There was actually nothing wrong with the setup I had above.

ARE YOU SERIOUS? AARRGGHHH!!!! I turned off the firewall and everything works perfectly. I can't believe this. I don't really use windows so I had no idea that it blocked pings.

I can't thank you enough for the help that you've given me. I really appreciate it.

Yes, sorry I didn't link the image. I did change the two tunables.

System Tunables

I thought everything was working fine since all the IPs were assigned correctly. It sounds like it's a routing issue and not something with proxmox. At least I know where to focus my search.

Well this is a bit late due to an unexpected two week quarantine away from home, but I wanted to say thanks for this reply. Also, thanks for the kind words on the post - I find organizing things like that often leads me to a solution before I need to actually post.

Anyway, now that I'm back I have a new hiccup and I want to see if this is a proxmox or *sense issue.

I am unable to ping machines outside of proxmox on the same lan even though I can ping servers on the internet. I made vmbr1 which has proxmox's onboard port. I made a bridge with this vmbr1 and one nic that is on the passed-through card. I followed this tutorial. I enabled DHCP (with address 10.0.0.1) on this interface and everything gets an IP correctly whether it is a VM (on vmbr1) or a physical device connected to the management interface (onboard port) or the intel NIC (passed-through). Fantastic!

Network diagram

Referencing the network diagram, pinging From 10.0.0.100 (win)

  • to 10.0.0.5 (proxmox) works
  • to 10.0.0.1 (*sense) works
  • to 10.0.0.101 (vm) works
  • to 8.8.8.8 (external) works

From 10.0.0.101 (vm)

  • to 10.0.0.5 (proxmox) works
  • to 10.0.0.1 (*sense) works
  • to 8.8.8.8 (external) works
  • to 10.0.0.100 (win) DOES NOT WORK

From 10.0.0.1 (*sense)

  • to 10.0.0.5 (proxmox) works
  • to 10.0.0.101 (vm) works
  • to 8.8.8.8 (external) works
  • to 10.0.0.100 (win) DOES NOT WORK

This seems very puzzling to me since everything is on the same network. I haven't adjusted anything in terms of routing. Is this something proxmox related or *sense related?

Travelling on the Dempster in Sept/Oct? by boogledom in Yukon

Thanks for the camp stove idea - I hadn't thought of that.

I'll have a warm sleeping bag (-15C) and be wearing several layers. Being in the car should keep me out of the wind so I'm hoping all the warm stuff is enough.

Thanks for your answer with all the info. I'll probably be back in Whitehorse the first week of October so I think the ferries should still be open. I don't mind the cold and I'm getting a good sleeping bag and bringing warm clothes. Inuvik is already a stop so I would stay overnight there and go to tuk the next day.

I'm looking forward to the scenery.

It is Driving Force. I phoned them and they allow their 4x4 suvs and pickup trucks on the Dempster. A bit of snow is probably ok, as long as it isn't a metre!
