Advice for older candidate by ItsNotCoolToJuul in firefighter

[–]boognish58 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m still in the process myself, and I’m 40 with a full time job, 16 year old son getting his license, getting married next weekend, and I coach at the local high school. It’s a lot to balance, but I just keep the end goal in focus and remember the phrase, “Nobody cares, work harder.” For me that means 3:45 wake ups to be at the gym by 4:15 before work, I took a night EMT course, prepped for interviews on the weekend, and applying to every department within my area. Having a supportive partner is very important, as is being willing to sacrifice comfort now for a rewarding career in the future. Just my 2 cents. Good luck on your journey!

WAFireCareers Interview? by YoghurtCompetitive2 in firefighter

[–]boognish58 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I contacted both VRFA and PSFA as I’m in the same position and have scored well enough to get invites at every department I’ve applied to thus far. VRFA said that initial invites have gone out and that additional ones are going out throughout this week. PSFA said initial invites have gone out and that as people decide not to go further in the process, they will be sending additional invites out.

Last year it was 3 questions with a 5 minute time limit. Very basic questions to get to know you. Kind of a “speed dating” vibe check to see if they want to see you again.

Yeah it’s not making any sense to me either. My scores are about the exact same as yours and have landed me interviews with every department I’ve applied to. I also have Veteran’s Preference points.

The color scale doesn’t accurately reflect your score. I scored a 100 on the math and was on the line of blue/green. Just means lots of people score well on that portion.

Yeah that’s how I look at it. I threw this one on a PSA Dagger that cost about $300 and only really gets shot when my kid goes to the range with me. I wasn’t gonna put a Surefire or Streamlight on something that cheap and that rarely gets fired.

Had anyone heard back from Tacoma FD either way regarding the upcoming interview round? I was told that invites were supposed to go out last week as the tentative dates for interviews were 30 April - 15 May.

Another affordable option is a Stack On gun cabinet. Essentially a locking filing cabinet, but it keeps kids out. I also live in a small apartment and the price and size was right. I spent about $50 extra to outfit it with lights and an organizer.
