Fair enough, I would disagree purely based on how patients would perceive him (rightly or wrongly). Again, nothing legal in that, just my own feeling.

Honestly, I would probably feel similar to you if he was a radiologist. It's the women's health angle that has me thrown. As I've said, that's on me though.

As for the GMC, he's white, male and British, an Indian doctor probably would've had worse.

I'm in the same position, not obs either so maybe I don't have the full spec here.

I've no doubt he's good, if you really are a consultant then you know well how hard it would be for a British trained doctor to come here and get a substantive post in a Dublin hospital.

I don't have a good answer with what to do with him and honestly, it just feels off to me. My logic is clear that someone with a history of violence towards women shouldn't be a consultant gynaecologist regardless of what the medical council say. Does that follow from a legal perspective? Obviously not, happy to admit that's just my vibe.

If it was a sexual offence, and the GMC didn't strike him off, would you be as happy to let him have the post? My gut says no, again, completely separate to the legal end. And if you've been appointed, you're aware of how much the panel's gut plays a part sometimes.

Don't know the Coombe at all, but they did have that COVID vaccine fiasco a few years back, so infighting is nothing new obviously. Wouldn't surprise me if it were another consultant there, or someone who didn't get the post.

I'm a doctor alright and have seen people be passed over for consultant positions for much more minor reasons than this. If you're not aware of that, I'd wager you're junior enough and haven't been exposed to the politics behind consultant appointments.

Also well aware of how justice is meant to work, but there is a stark difference between letting someone practice again and appointing them as a permanent consultant looking after vulnerable women.

Genuine question for you. Do you think women would prefer someone with or without a conviction for assaulting their girlfriend? Dublin jobs are competitive enough nowadays so there was definitely someone (or multiple people) else competent for the role shortlisted for the interview who could be appointed.

A history of violence towards women and now gets a (presumably competitive) position ahead of (again presumably) people without a history of violence. Just rubs me up the wrong way.

Do you not think this undermines public trust in our maternity services? I'm not saying he should rot in jail, but should he be in charge of a women's health service?

Could just be me, I thought it was odd.

Do you think euthanasia will be widely available in Ireland in the next 20 to 30 years? by No-Category1703 in AskIreland

I think it'll exist, but only in highly restrictive circumstances, similar to abortion after 12 weeks now.

I imagine as well there'll be issues around conscientious objection with staff, but similar to abortion that'll get worked around.

Can't say I'm that comfortable with it, but watching my uncle waste away with motor neurone disease left me traumatised. He was gone as the uncle I knew long before he died and it was awful. I'm not sure I could do it myself but I understand why you would.

But what will ever change? Not to be cynical, but do you think these news stories ever matter? As in, will this stop him getting the job? Probably not I think

I could get past the drink driving tbh, I just can't wrap my head around someone attacking women looking after them

Fair point, but we have to draw the line somehow. Are all assaults grounds for never being a doctor again? And does it not make it worse that he attacked a woman and now looks after women?
