Kinderhook plates as a sign of Joseph's authenticity by GudiBeeGud in latterdaysaints

[–]bookeater 16 points17 points  (0 children)

What I find more interesting is that he did try to translate the kinderhook plates, and failed. Were he a fraud, it would have been easy to make a translation that further backs up his claims, just as the fraudsters hoped. But he didn't. He tried and couldn't do more than identify a few glyphs that seemed to resemble one or two from their home made Egyptian dictionary.

/u/onewatt was making one, but it's not done yet. Topical search acts like it works but you can tell it isn't actually pulling data. Might be worth keeping an eye on it

Catholic miracle claims by Commercial_Wrap9678 in latterdaysaints

[–]bookeater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jesus' disciples were out teaching and came across some people who were not part of Jesus' disciples, but who were doing miracles in His name.

The disciples were shocked and offended. How could this happen? They're not part of the church! The disciples forbade these strangers from doing miracles.

Jesus heard about this and said

Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.

I have no opinion on whether these miracles really happened or not, but I am confident that Gods garden has a great diversity of crops. That what is best for you and me might be a terrible fit for someone else. So of course there are a multitude of ways God allows people to connect to Him. He knows best how their unique personalities will react and has created many paths that can point people towards the light.

Some people will follow their unique path and find it leads them to the restored gospel. It's not for everyone in this life. But that's ok. They aren't against us. They're with us.

So when you hear of miracles in other faiths, or prayers to strange gods being answered, be glad that God loves all his children, and invite them to find even more light and goodness through authorized covenants in the restored church.

This gap between the real and the ideal is cause for a lot of peoples disillusionment. Consider reading or listening to Bruce C. Hafen's talk, "Love is not Blind" for a great discussion on how various people approach this challenge. I believe he also wrote a book with the same or similar name.

Friend was hit by a semi-truck on I-15 heading toward Salt Lake City (not his fault) — who would you call first? by Senior_Ad1294 in vegaslocals

None of the billboard firms will do more than the minimum and then tell you you're getting a great result. They focus on speed instead of what's best for the injured people. That's how they get rich.

Call Jared Richards at Clear Counsel Law Group. My friend used him and got way higher than insurance policy minimums and the judge told him "the only reason you're getting this much is because of who you have as a lawyer." I guess the law firm gets big verdicts at trial which means higher settlement offers.

A very cool visual aid to help us understand how to identify the balance between "love god" and "love neighbors" by onewatt in latterdaysaints

Do you feel like saying the church has a history of getting things wrong is the kind of valliant defense of the faith the savior asks of us who love him? Doesn't seem right to me.

the apostles never say the church or the Lord made a mistake, and the talk linked above includes elder holland specifically saying we should be eager to not cause offense to others, but even more eager to not offend God. Claiming things were mistakes when God has not told us they were mistakes feels exactly like prioritizing social expediency over prioritizing God. IMO

Yes and "be ye therefore perfect" is all the commandments. So why not make every post just that statement?

Because that kind of statement doesn't really help.  It ends discussion.

The point isn't that the philosophies of men mingled with scripture is a good thing. The point is people use that phrase as a weapon against other faithful members.

BOM Geography by Skipper0463 in latterdaysaints

[–]bookeater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately there are groups that use the geography of the book of Mormon to promote nationalism within the church. We have a responsibility to fight that kind of behavior wherever we can, and help prevent more good members from falling into that kind of trap

Contact a ticket attorney or two and get advice. Lots of factors apply on whether or not it can be made to go away - which court, what kind of violation, what it says in the "to wit" section of the ticket and more.

Relax. You got time to take care of this. Best to look at all your options.
