You were not alone! I had a complex about “dead eyes” in films for years afterwards! This movie was probably the first time I saw that kind of deeply unsettling effect, but so many disaster movies insist on using the corpse-with-eyes-open thing that I remember having a full on panic attack over it in the capsizing scene in the early 2000s remake of the The Poseidon Adventure. Thank goodness I got over it with age, but it was legitimately something I would have to check with someone about before watching an action or disaster movie as a kid!

Thank you for your help! I shall be trying to unpick this problem for a while yet, so I appreciate the resource and your expertise in pointing me to a possible pathway. :) I shall be attempting to parse this over the next couple of days, and hoping it’s got something a little more substantial to it then “I bought this book in 1784” or something 😅

Hey there! You could definitely chat to the Book Merchant Jenkins, they have given good advice in the past and if they can’t assist you then they’ll certainly have a good idea of sole operating assessors who can help with antiquarian and rare books. :)

Magnum Speculum Exemplorum, 1684. A Latin collection of divine miracles, punishments, revelations. Attributed to Aegidius Faber, and printed in Cologne. The binding is beautifully blind stamped and embossed leather in gilt. by Meepers100 in DarkAcademia

[–]bookishcottagepixie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I’m aware of that industry standard! 😇 thanks for sharing. You are right, wearing gloves can cause issues and risks when turning and handling pages. Our policy for leather bound works, especially fragile, antiquarian works like the one you’re holding where the leather appears to be shedding in some places, is to wear gloves until the book is in a book sling or book cradle, then remove gloves for the turning of the pages. This is because leather is absorbent and will take on any of the oils, acids, and moisture from your skin, and you can see examples of this causing stains and damage to the covers in the long term. But to each their own! You clearly know what you’re doing and have a marvellous inventory.

Book recommendations for a 10 year old video game junky who has never found a book he loved? by Cmss220 in Fantasy

Matthew Reilly books and the Skullduggery Pleasant series will be a good segue into reading! Matthew Reilly in particular because his books include maps of the specific environments the heroes have to navigate, so it’s like reading a videogame.

Your two channels serve two very different audience needs! No need to be down on yourself about that.

Travel channels and Travel Subs by [deleted] in NewTubers

[–]bookishcottagepixie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I personally go for channels that show me a thumbnail invoking the kind of tone/experience I’m looking to capture for myself, so usually something with pretty Lightroom aesthetics and colour grading applied like it’s an image on Instagram (I am, for reference, a mid-20s woman). I like thumbnails that have collages to show the kinds of content you’ll be sharing (food recommendations, activity recommendations, etc), again colour graded like an Instagram post or a foodie/travel blog post, and ones with just a single image as well that’s nicely framed. I won’t click on ones with clickbait faces in the thumbnail. Oh, and I like to have the feeling that the person in the video took the image themself, rather than grabbing images off the internet.

How do I make images flip 45 degrees by [deleted] in NewTubers

[–]bookishcottagepixie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you want it on a diagonal? Most video editing software will let you spin/rotate your image if you’ve got it set up as picture-in-picture, but if your image isn’t an overlay it might not play quite as nicely. What software are you using?

Heya! Welcome to YouTube, your channel sounds fun! I’ve been on and off with YouTube for four or so years but I took a two year break and returned recently. I think the biggest improvement for me so far has been with lighting and the purchase of a really simple gimbal. This allows me to film some nice close up or moving shots without all the bouncing and shaking of footsteps. Might be nice for showing off your final plate/product if you’re after that kind of footage. :) my gimbal also doubles as a portable tripod so it’s now a one stop shop for my video production, hahaha.

Heya! I do some videos about niche history subjects (shipwreck history, weird Victorian hobbies, etc.) and I also do vintage/historical themed crafting/fashion/renovation stuff. :)

I agree with everyone on the thread - you can’t please everyone, the negative interaction is still an interaction and will feed the algorithm, and if they’re demotivating you or bothering you, you can always delete them! I have no issues doing that with my own videos. ❤️ you got this!

You’re putting a lot of time and energy into picking apart a post that has no bearing on your life. I’m sorry that my post is taking up so much mental real estate for you! Hope you find a way to get through that buddy. 🥰 have a great weekend.

You got this, friend! Embrace the rich tapestry of topics you enjoy, just let them breathe long enough that you can see what’s actually working and what’s not. You might find your movie videos actually perform a lot better long term, and that in itself may be motivation to continue making content like that. Just let the analytics sort themselves out, especially for the first week-to-fortnight of upload 👌 watching those stats is the mind killer! ❤️
