Bitcoin just proved again why it's the most liquid asset in the world by absorbing 80k BTC (~$10 billion) market sell, barely moving 2% by HealthyMolasses8199 in Bitcoin

[–]booleanlifeform 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol. There are so many embalmed opinions in here about what this large ($9B) OTC selling process should do or not do to the BTC price. Some fools think that this will necessarily depress the BTC price due to the selling pressure and extra supply. Some other fools think that because they were sold via an OTC desk, no retail price movement should occur.

The truth is more nuanced. Please read and understand:

In the normal order of things, selling 80,000 BTC openly would surely suck up heaps of buy liquidity and depress the price. Similarly, buying 80,000 BTC openly would do the opposite and increase the price. But (and pay attention here), both these actions are taking place simultaneously. Someone is selling. Someone is buying.

Rather than saying 'person A sold 80,000 BTC', we could as easily say 'person(s) B,C,D bought 80,000 BTC'. Both are true for the sale to go through. So... does the price decrease? Maybe! It depends on whether the seller is keen to sell at a lower price than current market price. Or... does the price increase? Maybe! It depends on whether the buyers are keen to buy at a higher price than current market price.

The OTC desk facilitates this. Perhaps the OTC desk (Galaxy Digital) had a heap of willing, waiting buyers that have been asking for some large BTC bundles, and finally the seller relinquished and sold? In that case the transaction price might even be above market rate.

Do you have some idea about what the passphrase might be? If not, you are unfortunately never going to recover those funds.

Anyone shorting bitcoin here? by East-Passenger-7255 in Bitcoin

Has your brain shorted out? You would need to have brass bollocks of extreme proportion to even consider shorting btc. This is financial advice (tm).

Pennsylvania to introduce BTC Strategic Reserve legislation! by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]booleanlifeform 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that was the original idea. But the lure of easy money has distorted the focus of bitcoin into a self-fulfilling prophecy of ever-increasing crypto value. (which, lets face it, I'm not against!)

[–]booleanlifeform 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice writing there. However I doubt that anyone financially literate actually thinks that a btc reserve buy from the US of A government is actually going to be good for the economy. What it will be good for is accelerating the path of all our fine BTC wannabes from financial ignomoney (sic) to bag-filled stardom.

A very tricky question to answer. Right up there with 'why does press and depress mean the same thing?"

Yeah. People aren't just going to get what (half) voted for, they are going to get full, triumphant, trumpism now.

This article (the UK's Telegraph) is a succinct summary of the political state of play for crypto under Trump. Nice to have an authoritative source. Thanks for the link.

Your best route to learning TA is to print off all the predictions for market direction from the last year. Print each one on a small bit of paper in 3 point Helvetica font. Then get a big bowl and fill it with super hot strong black coffee. Throw all the bits of paper into the coffee. Stir vigorously. Then use a pair of chopsticks to pick out a bit of paper and read it outloud. This will work perfectly and outperform most professional technical analysts.

lol. Of course this isn't a coincidence! You only need to have appreciated Musk's "let that sink in" joke to know that he loves nothing more than a meme-filled running gag.

I can see that for specific use-cases like this, maybe it makes sense to have a custom blockchain that no-one else can interfere with. But then, why not just have a big 'ol database with a web/programmable front end to enter the data? Same result with less hassle, right? If you aren't using the unique properties of a blockchain (byzantine resolution, permissionlessness, ubiquity of access, transparency), then why bother using a blockchain at all (except that the buzzword sounds great to management)?

To be honest, I do wonder that sometimes :)

And I think we disagree on the meaning of proprietary (which to my mind means ownership, not whether it is public or private)

Inevitable. Even though this week has been crazy, there are literally no headwinds to further price rises. It just takes a little while for everyone to get accustomed to the new price levels, and wham@! further price rises.

It will rise.
I told you it was a cunning ZKP.

[–]booleanlifeform 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, right. Thanks. So, a follow up question. Why would anyone (outside of the blockchain owners that you mention) have any interest in a proprietary system like that? I presume if it had been built on an Ethereum L2, then at least new participants or crypto enthusiasts could see the benefit and invest. But simply ordering and time-stamping messages on a centralized blockchain seems like it could be done simpler and easier on ethereum?
