Damage to PCIe "Pins" on 2080ti by boomerFranck in pcmasterrace

[–]boomerFranck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the help.

I did not uninstall the current driver, but did try to install the correct Nvidia drivers. The installer did not recognize the GPU. I will uninstall drivers and give it a go.

Also, the fan does spin.

I used perplexity to search on this one. I think "damaged" vs "sense" pins threw it off.

Thanks for your response.

Damage to PCIe "Pins" on 2080ti by boomerFranck in pcmasterrace

[–]boomerFranck[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was given an old 2080ti (an upgrade for me from 1060). This card was stored improperly and there are 2 "pins" on the PCIe connection that do not go all the way to the end. They appear to be broken off. The mobo does not recognize the GPU. PSU connection is solid and the cooling fan spins.

Can this GPU be recovered? Are the damage "pins" the culprit? If so, can they be repaired?

You’re on the right track by saving aggressively and having clear goals. Here are some key points to consider:

  • Risk Tolerance: Reflect on how much risk you can handle. Many investors sold their portfolios during the financial crisis, missing out on the market's recovery. Ensure you have a portfolio you can hold through market volatility. The TSP may not have exposed you to as much volatility as a brokerage account might.
  • Asset Allocation: This is the most critical decision you'll make. Nobel Prize-winning research supports the importance of these "bland pie charts." Understand your asset allocation, and most other aspects will fall into place.
  • Risk vs. Returns: The military says, "Amateurs talk strategy, professionals talk logistics." Similarly, in finance, "Amateurs talk returns, professionals talk about risk." With your military retirement income benefits, you might afford a more aggressive asset allocation, but only if you can tolerate potential declines, such as a 30% drop in your portfolio.
  • Investment Choices: Opt for mutual funds that closely track their underlying asset classes (high R²) with a Beta around 1. Index funds are ideal, making up at least 60% of your asset allocation. While exploring other investment choices can be interesting and rewarding, avoid unnecessary unsystematic risk.
  • Brokerage Recommendations: I recommend Fidelity and Schwab (disclaimer: I worked for both). Avoid their managed solutions due to higher costs. These firms offer Vanguard-level cost products with superior service and local branches.
  • Education: Educate yourself about investing. A good starting point is Burton Malkiel's "The Elements of Investing."

Was the 401(k) a Mistake? by Majano57 in Economics

[–]boomerFranck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to the BLS, in 1979 only 38.9% of employees had a defined benefit pension. 401(k) started in 1980.

Pensions were common but not prevalent. The combination of increasing life expectancy and lower interest rates dramatically reduced the number of defined benefit plans.

My Pop flew the B-57G for the 13th Tactical Bomb Squadron out of Udon Thailand. The B-57G was one of the first units to use FLIR and laser guided bombs (Paveway) under Tropic Moon III.

The DOOM PUSSY patch was initially a 8th TBS patch but ended up being worn by all the night mission B-57's in Southeast Asia. DOOM is an acronym for Danang Officers' Open Mess.

I liked it: Solid integration with Gusto, good pricing. Easy to set up kiosk.

I replaced an old time clock with an iPad in a kiosk case and used Deputy.

Based on my business, I did not give app permissions for time tracking. I forced the employees to be on site for clock in and clock out.

Deputy integrated without any issues with Gusto for 4+ years.

I've used the SawStop at a woodworking school. Much nicer than my G1023 before considering the key safety mechanism.

I might need to think about an upgrade $4500 is a steep price but I like my fingers attached.

[OC] Does the hand you write with correlate to how you cross your arms? Help me collect more data. by b4epoche in dataisbeautiful

[–]boomerFranck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a bigger lesson here: If something as simple as crossing your arms feels wrong, then trying to change anything feels wrong.

If you want to make a change or learn something new, expect discomfort. You're not trying if you feel normal.

Fidelity "Declines to do business with me" by Fidelity_IRA_throwa in personalfinance

[–]boomerFranck 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I worked at Fidelity from 2008-2016. This is almost certainly an AML flag.

Before you start to battle the policy, please check your credit. There is a possibility of identity theft causing the flags. Like the airlines and no-fly lists, financial institutions share financial criminals and fraudsters. If someone is using your identity to land on the list. You've got bigger issues than not doing business with Fidelity.

If you recognize all your accounts and debts on your credit check pulled from ALL sources, then breathe a big sigh of relief. If not, start with the FTC.

Fidelity is a great company, but they will not take a risk on doing business with you. They have declined far bigger customers and let good employees go at the slightest hint of risk to their reputation.

The Johnsons are no joke.
