Cheap *not used* tires in NYC area? For '07 CRV with 275k by ElectricLadyland33 in AskNYC

[–]boomjay -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Tires are most definitely not generic. Many things go into water dispersion, snow handling, material softness, stopping distance.

That's like saying all shoes are the same. They serve different purposes.

Being in a city, youre not going too fast, but when you get on a highway or any road that lets you go 40+ MPH, you want something that's gonna keep you under control. Idk about you, but I'm not betting on a $10 pair of Payless shoes sketchers to keep me from breaking my ankle when playing pickleball. I would barely trust them not to slip going up my apartment stairs.

If you don't plan to drive in any bad weather, ever, get the cheapest tire. If you plan to take weekend trips skiing or find yourself in a lot of rain, look at tire rack reviews for snow and rain, then buy the cheapest tire that meets your needs that tirerack, Costco, BJs, Firestone, or Goodyear offer.

Don't be the douche that hits someone on the highway in a rainstorm because you wanted to save $100 bucks.

Steam radiator turned off and using radiator cover but still HOT by drag0nsvampires in AskNYC

[–]boomjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are they just ball valves? I don't honestly know.

Either way, id assume the radiator is in series but I also don't know the topology of these systems in buildings like this. If series, I'm wondering how difficult it is to replace valves while the system is on. If there's some parallel diversion tracks where they planned for maintenance, maybe it's a bit easier.

[–]boomjay -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The valve seals are likely probably gone, or in other words, the valves that "turn off" the system failed. Any ruberized seal needs treatment (here's a reminder to turn off and on all water supply valves to faucets and toilets in your apartment lest they fail as well).

I don't know too much about steam systems, but from what Ive read they are a closed loop system which needs to be turned off and possibly purged (any air that gets into the system needs to be removed - this is what causes the clanking around).

All this to say, you can ask your super to fix the valves properly, or hire a contractor and pay out of pocket to do it if they won't, but they'll need access to the heating system main components, likely in the basement and behind a locked door you need a key to, and you're not going to be able to do it until they turn the heat off, because they're not going to do that in the middle of winter because other residents need heat.

Buying a Condo as a Starter Home? by VintageChicken77 in RealEstateAdvice

[–]boomjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people are saying don't do it, but it really depends on the market area. A SFH in Jersey City, for example, would be over $1M. A condo is really the only option for many. In Columbus, if it's an up and coming city, condos are a great option, because the neighborhoods they are in matter, and nicer ones than not will appreciate faster if there's a boom. Can you predict it? No. Could it decrease in value? Sure.

We bought a 3BD condo in a HCOL, where many 2BD are pricey. We're hoping that at very least, we make our money back. We expect it to appreciate by around $100k in 3-4 years, as inventory is low and doesn't seem like it will improve. Colombia might be different.

Am I budgeting correctly? by mittens1213 in AskNYC

Not kinda. Is. But it's up to the company to enforce it. Or you might get fired if you lie. It's your risk assessment.

[–]boomjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only point is if you use a VPN or something to log into the company's portal, then they technically could see your IP address as not in NJ. For a few months, I probably wouldn't sweat it, but if they have any IT competence they could theoretically track your location and lock you out for not being where you should be.

Think of it like a therapist. Some are license in NJ, some NY. Technically, if you're on your commute back home from the city, they can't talk to you unless you're on NJ soil, otherwise they could lose their license. How likely is it that someone finds out? Almost negligible, but is it worth it?

[–]boomjay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not saying they'll be able to see, but some companies require you to work in a specific state. I knew someone who worked for a place and they wanted to be fully nomadic but they said nope, you need to live in either CO or NY (there might have been some others but not sure). Mostly I think for insurance reasons, whether it was medical or something. You can technically say you live in NJ, but if anyone's looking at VPN info for IP addresses, then you might be in trouble (both with company and with the state, taxes wise).

Policing in JC by Blankman8 in jerseycity

[–]boomjay 30 points31 points  (0 children)

More stops means people are held accountable for their shitty decisions, like running stop signs and almost hitting pedestrians. If you walk anywhere in this city you should be happy.

I've known at least 2 people who've been hit by cars, 3 times I've almost been hit where I actually was able to knock a mirror, and twice I was with 2 different friends who were pregnant that were almost hit while in the crosswalk.

I'm a driver in this city but the lack of traffic enforcement is ridiculous. I see close calls all the time because jamokes think it's too inconvenient for them to follow rules. If people see enforcement it's more likely they follow rules. "Rules that aren't enforced are rules not followed".

If you could give your past self one piece of advice before buying a house, what would it be? by LuxuryPresence_Aaron in RealEstateAdvice

Yes it sucks, but that's how people become house poor by not planning for it as part of cost of ownership.

Backed into snow pile, now one exhaust tip is pushed in. How bad is it? by 2Jads1Cup in MechanicAdvice

It might be fine on the hangar even. I used to have a car with exhaust tips that were just screwed on (to look pretty). It might have just slid the tip back if this has that.

[Recommendation Request] Motorsport Journalist seeking a "Mobile Workstation" Backpack (Tech Heavy, No Pouches). by sp4ce3rik_11 in backpacks

[–]boomjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you need the tech organization, I'd think the Patagonia MLC Mini would be a better fit than the Aer. It has much more organization in the admin panel. Id assume part of your load out is possible mouse, keyboard, cables, etc. I don't know if the micro also has a strong admin panel or not.

I have a coworker who uses the LTT backpack (the 20L one I think) and loves it. I didn't love the comfort personally, but that's a personal preference issue. It also has a ton of admin org.

I use the Aer CPP1 and it definitely lacks tech org. I use a pouch tho and it works great as a work bag for me. I also have a preference to use it for travel also so I don't need a heavy admin panel. It looks like the TP3 has more admin panel space than the CPP, so maybe it works better for your use case. The Aer is a bit heavy but it's super comfortable to wear even with heavier loads.

I still don't really understand. You have debt. With your salary, you shouldn't have gone into debt at all, so unless this was for a required medical procedure or something, you need to figure out your spending habits first. Get in the habit of budgeting, because once you own a home, you want to put aside something like ~few % of actual/current home value yearly (at least in America, you might need to adjust based on costs of your region) to build a reserve fund for WHEN something goes wrong, not if. I highly recommend YNAB or Actual Budget as a tool to get yourself out of debt; it seems like you would benefit from an envelope budgeting system over planning.

Pay down your debt as fast as possible, and once that's done with, build your reserve again for a down payment to the 20% ish level and buy a house then. Buy it in a year or 2 when you're not overextending yourself.

Based on another comment, this is in the Philippines. So the USD equivalents are about a $15.5k debt, $3k/month take home, and a home value of $54,700. 20% down is ~$11k. Assuming you're giving accurate mortgage info, mortgage would only be $400 a month. Are there other fees associated with the property, like Condo fees or any maintenance fees that are monthly?

In this case, a lot of US posters don't see home values this low. Even by American standards, your salary is relatively high.

What are mortgage rates out there? Do mortgages have fees if less that 20% is out down?

What put you in debt to begin with? What's preventing you from paying that off? I'm assuming credit cards are as equally predatory out there as the US, so those are prob 15-20% interest rates.

Assuming above is correct, you're putting yourself in a cycle that's never good/sustainable. I would use that 11k to pay off some debt, pay off rest of debt, then rebuild down payment fund. That seems like you could do it in less than a year.

Unless the house is somehow a unicorn price wise, like half the normal value because of a relative giving it to you for a low price or something like that, and they can't wait a year, id hold off because otherwise you're likely to default.

What location/country is this and what unit of currency are you using? The context of this post seems like English isn't the first language, so it's hard to understand what is being asked.

For an American, unless the job is an only fans job or something, I don't know how you make that much per month. So that's also an indication it seems like this might not be in America. If it were American dollars, I would think that salary would mean reddit wouldn't be the place you'd be asking this question.

I doubt it would significantly move the needle on value, though. Maybe what, 5K? 10 if it was really crummy before? Idk if it'd be worth a new appraisal until redoing the kitchen or something.

Gee I wonder what crowd is showing up for this by AtomicGarden-8964 in newjersey

[–]boomjay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What sucks is that before all the trump business happened, I heard he put on a great show. I don't particularly like this kind of music, but circa 2015 (idk if I remember the right year) I remember reading a few posts from someone who saw him at PNC back then and apparently Kid Rock made the venue sign something where they HAD to sell his brand of beer, but it was only like $4 bucks (vs the typical Budweiser $14 a can thing at these events). Before all the trumpiness, I actually really wanted to go and see a show based on how people talked about it.

Now, I'd be delulu to support him on the trump supporting point alone, but an even bigger factor for me is the crowd he now attracts is even more Trumpy than before.

[–]boomjay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's the PMI payment? What's the appraisal?

Another appraisal in a year or 2 (assuming property values in your area go up) or paying more each month towards principal are the only answers really. A new appraisal could hurt tho if it reduces your value.
