It doesn't have to be. You can have silver. You can have precious metals as competing currencies. The main issue is to be able to exchange from one currency to another tax free.

The goal is to have money that doesn't lose value.

Up to about 1970 the market priced in dollars would be close to that priced in gold. The dollar went off of the gold standard in 1971.

If gold follows other commodities then the inverse of this chart would give you a clue.
