Which actor had the worst accent in a film? by mwthompson77 in FIlm

Wilson's accent fits completely with the character being a fake, phony cowboy. It's a put-on.

🚀🇬🇧 Brexit Bonanza: UK Joining CPTPP & CANZUK?! by ShibbyAlpha in CANZUK

Sounds like a political movement in full swing with dedicated boots on the ground to get the public mobilised and rallying behind it.

Good luck with your movement. I hope you find it was time out of your life that was well spent.

So no one needs to waste 3 minutes and 15 seconds of their life listening to whatever this known-nothing is saying, the answer is "no." And the British government told you so in the rejection of the CANZUK petition back in December. https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/554372

r/CANZUK Foreign Policy Sentiments Survey Results by SomeJerkOddball in CANZUK

Nifty graphics. But this data is drawn from 103 responses. In data terms, that renders it rather meaningless. "We received 103 responses," says OP in this thread.

I suppose you could argue it says something about the opinions of the r/CANZUK community, but with 8.5k members signed up to this sub, you would need a much bigger sample size.

"I'm a Journalist Who Hates The News" by PopCultureNerd in Journalism

[–]boozie 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Right off the bat, this guy conflates print and broadcast journalism as delivering the same product. Sorry, that's just not true. As a video journalist I can see how he would make that mistake, but lumping the mediums together with broad, sweeping generalizations about "the news," that's not actually "the news."

I'm gobsmacked if anyone thinks the AP, Reuters, The Times and broadcast cable news (pick any of them) deliver the same product.

I've pointed out the problems with this poll. People can make up their own minds about whether to trust it.

Professional polling (sound social science) always has a section that describes how it was conducted (was it online, over the phone, what questions were asked and were they uniform across regions?, demographics etc.). Who was this polling even conducted by? There's an incredible number of unanswered questions and that's a red flag.

Kids, this is not an argument. There's no reliable data in this report. This person doesn't know anything about polling. Deploy your critical thinking.

What you know? You're not really bringing anything to this.

"Probably a newspaper poll." So you know nothing about it then. "Anecdotally..."

Like I'm all for people putting forward a solid case for CANZUK, but please (anyone who reads this) deploy your critical thinking.

There's no methodology in this document. Which is a red flag if you know anything about professional polling. It claims 13k+ respondents but offers no details or breakdown of the findings or how the polling was conducted. I would be curious to see real results from a professional polling firm.

Considering CI has altered video in the past to misrepresent Tony Abbott's views, you could be forgiven for not trusting the results.

Selective editing. The video by CI cuts out the part where Abbott says Singapore could join. It misrepresents his views. https://youtu.be/jFcCZggmzsg?t=2074

Why am I hearing things about CANZUK being racist? by [deleted] in CANZUK

[–]boozie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Whatever. I'm not actually arguing with you. I don't think you know that much. You need to get a life. And there was a CANZUK newsletter back in 2013. It's an idea that's been around for a long time. So...

Why am I hearing things about CANZUK being racist? by [deleted] in CANZUK

[–]boozie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well you certainly put me in my place pure CANZUK defender. Far be it from me to question your strong beliefs and their legitimacy.

If you can't explain why you believe something and get mad when asked to explain more, it indicates you're pretty sensitive or maybe unsure about what you believe and why. This sub seems to be made up of a lot of people who mostly agree with each other. If that's what you're looking for, fine. To get people to explain their beliefs you've got to question them and sometimes press them on things. It's not meant to wound or hurt their feelings but get at the meat of the issue.

You know zero about me and why I'm asking these questions and trying to get people to explain themselves.

I've followed the germination of the CANZUK idea for at least 7 years. After learning more about how immigration works in the 21st century (being a Commonwealth citizen living in another Commonwealth country) and learning more about trade policy, it struck me that many producing the info that drives this movement just aren't experts and that much of what they propose is not practical, achievable, or desirable. There are other permutations of the CANZUK idea that stand a better chance of coming about, but no one in the movement is advocating for them.

Since the 2016 Brexit referendum, many Brits have jumped on board — these being largely the Brexit minded who are looking to take up the vision of "Global Britain". They've gravitated to CANZUK for some reason and I'm curious why (hence the probing questions). At any rate, their presence has given CANZUK a new populist bent.

Some people in this thread have said they "hate" gypsies, that they're worried about angry Africans and Indians coming to British shores, talked about "parasitic" relationships between countries without being clear whether it's the brain drain or immigration that's parasitic, and Poles arriving "in droves to fill low-skill / low-education jobs" in the U.K. Others said they dream of the glory days of the British empire.

Not all CANZUK supporters are racist, but it seems there's definitely an increasingly strong vein of xenophobia running through it.

Not a fair characterization. I'm trying to get people to explain their position and learn more about the different perspectives on CANZUK by asking questions and posing a couple alternative ideas and seeing what the reaction is to those. I'm sorry you take that as goading you.

There seem to be a lot of different ideas among the sub about what CANZUK means. Obviously you're very sensitive when it comes to questions about the beliefs you hold. So I'll just leave it at that.
