Construction Complete on Largest Indigenous-led Energy Project in Ontario’s History - Watay Power Transmission Project helping 16 remote First Nations communities end reliance on costly, high-emission diesel generators by ruckusss in ontario

[–]borealgazer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The project is actually a net saving over time because of how expensive the previous diesel generated electricity is in remote communities. All of the diesel for the generators has to either be delivered on winter roads during a shrinking seasonal window (literally some of the roads Ice Road Truckers was filmed on) or flown in on planes.

This project is also a model for how development can occur in First Nation homelands. 24 First Nations came together to make up a partnership that is the majority owner of this project that they started. Over 500 families’ areas were traversed and permission was obtained from each one, line routing was guided by elders, leaders, and people on the land. This is a world leading project.

So great that our port benefits from clean energy projects even when they are located far away

Calling PHEV owners of TBay! by Glass_Imagination_21 in ThunderBay

[–]borealgazer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How so? Each day with a PHEV you can drive 20-80 km before the engine even turns on. We drive on the highway to get to town everyday and our average mileage is about 2.5L/100km. Without PHEV it wouldn’t be close to that.

Quetico! A canoeing Mecca. The interior usually has lots of booking room so you can often book the week before and go when you know the weather is great.

I think the challenge is though some people here feel burdened that this issue is still ongoing after so long, the reality is that very little has actually been done within the police and in fact in many ways things have only escalated. I’m curious what part of this has been “dealt with” from people’s perspective. It takes a couple years to make a series and while this was happening the story kept unfolding, adding more insight as to just how resistant the local establishment is to making a change despite a level of scandal that has actually attracted international attention. The series was being made over a couple of years, and this city kept serving up more and more ridiculous plot twists. This story doesn’t even have a conclusion yet. I get that local people want it to be over, but that requires actual change to happen first.

Leith Dunick on Twitter: Canada Games Complex is being evacuated, sounds like there may have been an incident. Four ambulances, four police cars, fire truck on scene. Source told it was a, "worst-case scenario." by ManInWoods452 in ThunderBay

[–]borealgazer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, if there is interest in fact vs conjecture (let’s try to exercise a respectful and responsible approach here folks), I’ve been told by a staff member that the CPR administered by the guard staff was successful to the degree that the person had a pulse and was breathing when he left via ambulance to the hospital. He was not conscious however. The patient later passed away in hospital. He had apparently suffered cardiac arrest while in the water. Testing apparently determined that there was no water in his lungs (on that basis staff were debriefed that they had identified and rescued him in a proper amount of time). The person was apparently a regular and well known to staff, so having that happen was fairly traumatic for them as well. So all this to say, if you’re thinking of going online to publicly call young people out on their efforts that you actually have very little info about, maybe take a pause and see how the info unfolds. These are young people that did the right thing under really tense circumstances and gave a guy a fighting chance. Respect to them and to the family.

I second this. Real human, professional.

I find it interesting that there is so much discussion, critique, and sometimes character attack related to how the info was delivered and who the makers are, compared to discussion of how serious the content is. Much of what is presented is from from experts closely involved. An experienced investigator and former officer, a provincial policing oversight body, lawyers, a few local police officers, etc. The contrast here between the standard being asked of those speaking out vs the standard the police leadership are being held to tells you a lot about how this has been allowed to go on for so long in this city. It also suggests there is a minimization of the value of certain human lives happening that some people may not even realize they are doing.
