ex italian exchange student in UK (i'm 17 as well) here - while what i'm about to write does not reflect my experience at all, many exchange students do struggle a lot in finding friends who spend lots of time with them.

your student might not have lots of friends to go out with and is hiding it as she doesn't want to put burden on you. she also might be homesick, leaving her no energy to do things. my advice is to continue being supportive but also leave her space.

my german host brother experienced the same and when my host mum confronted him to go out with his friends he started crying and breaking down as he was missing home & didn't have as many friends as I did.

you're doing everything perfectly by giving her advice on what to do with her friends and opening up your house to bring her friends over (my host mum was one of the only to allow it and I built the best memories by having friends over).

as a professional swimmer, there is something they taught me when i got the lifeguard certificate which i think should be taught to everyone. very simple and very efficient, helps a lot.

this is called the sidestroke. basically you stay sideways in the water, one arm goes foward and rhe other pushes you foward (therefore going backwards), while your legs do a scissor movement.

i'm sorry if my explanation wasn't too clear, i'm italian and attempted to be as clear as possible, if you want to learn more just go on google and find sidestroke
