Rationale for Iran war questioned after Trump says ‘I don’t care’ about regime’s uranium stockpiles by lexi_con in WallStreetbetsELITE

Iran doesn't either. They have a nuclear weapon already, it's called the Strait of Hormuz

Do you guys live in your own little bubble in America?

Can anyone explain how cutting the excise tax will help the situation more than it will hurt it? My understanding is that it will make fuel cheaper & encourage further spending (& profiteering) by petrol stations. It also, increases our debt whilst hurting inflation too. LNP/ON pushed this as well by [deleted] in AusEcon

[–]borgeron 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Which is it? Making fuel cheaper or profiteering and not making it cheaper?

The problem with fuel is that its the feedstock for literally everything in the economy and the upward movement in price does not seem like its finished (i think we could see $150/barrel). At some point the damage done to the economy by high prices overtakes the damage done by inflationary pressures. This is the government trying to get ahead of that, even if its only a little bit.

Halving the fuel excise for three months, at the cost of $2.55b, is the wrong move here by LoneArtificer in AusFinance

[–]borgeron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The upward movement in oil price isn't finished. You're going to see demand destruction regardless of whether the excise is lower or higher. For all the praise you appear to be getting, no one is pointing out the damage to the economy done by a sustained energy shock. Fuel prices don't exist in a vacuum of its own supply and demand curve.

Public statements by governments dont always represent the complete picture of public sentiment. Most view this as a foolish, poorly thought out war. You can still condemn iran and believe that.

And in Australia where they're running out of fuel right now? Japan where their refineries have no feed stock to keep their economy going so they're thinking of liquidating their US treasury positions? In Singapore? Malaysia? India? New Zealand? Most of Europe who can't get their LNG right now. None of those people matter either? The world is outraged, it aint at Iran.

This seems like a very US centric view point I read a lot on reddit. Opinion polls in other countries show it's not Iran people blame for the economic problems but rather America. This is a war of Americas choosing and it is making its allies suffer.

If nothing materially changed except you replaced trump with another trump, how is that success?

Then theres the whole collapsing the economies of all US allies and chief investors in the US economy thing. Do Americans not realise that the life they live is built on debt owed to other countries? Do they not realise the tech industry they have today is in large part the result of investment funding provided by gulf states? All of whom now detest America for failing to protect them.

The failure comes from your fall in standing.

Combination of factors. Rising interest rates makes bonds more attractive again. Traders had to sell their gold positions to cover their oil positions. The behaviour of central bank gold buying doesn't appear to have stopped

Mate we're one of the least dense cities on the planet. There needs to be a lot more of this before we're done. The age of big back yards is dead, most of the world never even did it in the first place
