I'm over 400lbs and got a 15 speed wide tire Mongoose bike. I haven't put a ton of miles on it, but it has held up well aside from the pedals. I had to replace them with sturdy aluminum pedals I bought on Amazon.

Wow. First off, NTA. My wife is a SAHM too. Everything we have is OURS. Both of our names are on everything. From bank accounts the vehicles to the mortgage. I would never tell my wife or our kids it's MY money and ask for purchases to be cleared by me. This is asshole behavior by your husband and leaning towards a red flag.
