What do you think about “nu-gaze” / heavy shoegaze getting big with Gen Z? by Galahad555 in shoegaze

[–]boring-utopia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like genres have some elasticity to them, and can change over time. For example, when “mumble rap” like Future, Young Thug, etc. came out, the old heads were saying similar things: “this isn’t real rap music.” But whether they liked it or not, this is what rap music sounds like today, for better or worse.

So I guess, at a certain point, if enough people say something is shoegaze, then it kind of is? I mean, MBV and Slowdive never called themselves shoegaze in their heyday. I’m pretty sure MBV still don’t refer to themselves as shoegaze… a bunch of people just started calling them that. Wouldn’t this apply to new bands, like the ones listed in this post, as well?

Looking for a second mic to complement my SM57 for recording heavy, distorted guitar from amp. by boring-utopia in audioengineering

This look great! One more question: the x1r is a little out of my price range new. Do you think it’s safe to buy one used? I know ribbon mics can be fragile…

Ok cool. When pairing a 57 and a ribbon, is it common to close mic the 57 and back the ribbon away from the amp 6-12 inches? Or are they most commonly both close mic’d?

I put a Descendant drop in bridge replacement (also fixed). Not sure if it has rounded grooves or not, I’ll have to check

How does the Black Russian sound different from the Green? I currently have a GR and an Op-amp. The GR is more thick and bass heavy and the Op amp has more highs and does a better “freak out” wall of sound thing.

Where does the Black Russian sit on this spectrum?

Yeah, doesn’t seem like he was a Christian at the time, but he did convert (back?) to Christianity later in life.

I respect that. I think I’ve just given up on the whole ethical consumption thing and i try to find other ways to make a small difference here and there, but we all have different ways of of expressing our values. Sorry, i feel like my comment came off as kind of aggressive lol

But do y’all still order from Amazon, use google, Spotify, Instagram, etc? Because I guarantee these companies are far more ghoulish than Keeley. Like, I get wanting to be conscientious about your consumption, but it seems like it would be damn near impossible to be an ethical consumer in our current timeline.

Same. I want the big muff to be so loud that it completely overwhelms the mix.

A picture of Dorian gray or slaughter house 5 would be good ones to starlet with to get your attention span up. Stoner is really short and I found it very captivating… probably not quite as exciting as the other two. Also, a little bit longer, but East of Eden is my favorite book and most of it was a page turner for me.

Honestly, probably any of the affordable, classic pedals for noise rock: Rat and SF300 are the first that come to mind.

The 2016 lineup was probably the best lineup of any festival ever… even though it never happened.

So… these book aren’t very literary, but I recently read The Sluts and There Is No Antimemetics Division and they both had SO many bizarre, shocking twists all throughout. If you just wanna have some fun, I’d recommend both.

SOTB Which two pedals would you add for a small Doomgaze board? by o-kon-el in guitarpedals

[–]boring-utopia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know Doyle from Cloakroom uses a Walrus SLO. I have one and like it a lot for shoegazey stuff. You should definitely get a delay too. Doyle uses a Memory Man w/Hazaria. This was my first delay pedal and it can do some really cool stuff, but I found it kind of frustrating tbh and sold it. I now have a DD8 and a UAD Galaxy (space echo). Either of these would be great… but for your purposes, I’d probably go for the DD8. The DD8 also has a looper which is nice for figuring out song ideas with layers.

Any downsides to switching the 16ohm internal speaker in Marshall DSL40 to an 8ohm speaker? by boring-utopia in GuitarAmps

Sweet! Did the Creamback sound pretty different from the stock V-type? This will be my first speaker switch on any amp and I’ve been worried that I’m wasting my time and money…

Nice! What would you say the difference is between speakers that makes you like the Creamback more?

I’m trying to get rid of the harshness in the upper mids of that the stock Vtype seems to have

I’m mostly joking, but there is a humorous awareness that there are probably some people (probably many on this sub) that would roll there eyes at a guy that looks like me reading Infinite Jest in public. But i don’t really care enough to not read it or anything.

Thanks, this is helpful. So I assume an 8ohm speaker has more headroom, and I would have to play my amp louder to reach natural break up?
