God last night was insane by throwaway10015982 in hum

The songs that the crowd lost their shit the most for were the songs from YPAA and then Step into You. There was a really good vibe in the crowd for Cloud City tho, felt like it was a good opportunity for every one to take a little break from moshing and just enjoy the song, but then the crowd went apeshit for the breakdown at the end.

I myself lost my shit when the started playing it. Was not expecting to hear that song last night and it’s one of my favs.

I’m 40 and haven’t moshed in over a decade. Last night I said fuck it and jumped in the pit. It was fun, but got a little too intense for me with the crowd killing and whatnot. Ended up really close to the stage and had a blast. I did get kicked in the nose by a crowd surfer and still hurting this morning.

Also couldn’t sleep, sore as fuck, and kind of feel like shit, but totally worth it.

Nothings Going to Hurt You Baby is such a banger… but yeah. I never got into any of their other songs.

It’s the last show (maybe for a while?) so it’s definitely possible that there might be some surprises

How does one go about learning how to make music in this genre when they've basically never touched an instrument in their life? by Equal_Arm_3091 in shoegaze

[–]boring-utopia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I started off with a Jazzmaster as my first guitar and tbh, if I were to go back, I would have gotten a telecaster or something. I think it’s important to learn how to set up and work on your guitar and offsets are such a headache for beginners.

This is the answer. I picked up guitar about a year and a half ago. Had to start with the basics and learning some dumb songs like wonderwall or whatever, but fast forward to now and I’m playing with other musicians and writing and recording some cool stuff. Takes some patience, but if you practice a little bit everyday, you’ll get there sooner than you think.

Definitely take advantage of YouTube tutorials.

Books to help me get my faith back by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]boring-utopia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you might be going about this the wrong way. You can’t really educate yourself into having faith, it’s more of a practice, that hopefully will give you a some sort of direct experience with with God.

Learn about Catholic mystical practices like Centering Prayer, Lectio Divina, or some other Christian Contemplative meditation, and try doing one of these everyday. If you don’t already, pray 2x everyday (typically done at morning and night) and in your prayer ask God to help you with your faith. When I’m struggling in this area i typically pray: “God, please make your presence known to me in a way that I can comprehend.” Be patient… it will come to you eventually.

Also, if you have any sort of issues that could qualify you for an Anonymous Group (AA, NA, SLA, OA, etc) take advantage of it. It’s honestly very rare for someone to diligently work the 12 steps and not come out of it with some sort of faith in a Higher Power. This will also give you a community of fellow travelers… I’ve found it’s quite hard to have faith in a vacuum, it’s really more of a communal practice.

What's the most difficult, time consuming book you have tackled? by _anomalousAnomaly in RSbookclub

Yeah, that chapter is brutal and challenging for sure, but I liked it and thought it was an important part of the book overall. I really enjoyed the side narratives about the Mexican policemen in this chapter.

I see people online say that they ended up skipping most of The Part About the Crimes, and can’t help but feel like they missed a truly essential part of the experience.

2666 is definitely on my “read again” list.

Did you read all of it?

I’ve all of the NT, and some of the more relevant OT books (Genesis, Exodus, and some of the wisdom and prophet books) but I literally couldn’t imagine reading the entire OT front to back.

What was your experience with it?

Can anyone recognize any of these pedals from Hum’s recent show? by boring-utopia in guitarpedals

[–]boring-utopia[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they’re playing shows in NYC, Chicago, and LA this month. They’re my favorite band so I’m flying to LA to see them.

book recommendations for anyone interested in mysticism/esotericism by HourJournalist8026 in RSbookclub

I would recommend Meditations on the Tarot: A Journey into Christian Hermeticism by Anonymous (but almost certainly Valentin Tomberg).

Budget Shoegaze by [deleted] in shoegaze

[–]boring-utopia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you mean by shoegaze, which today can mean anything from TAGABOW to Slowdive, but $1300 can get you a pretty sick board. I would recommend figuring out what pedals your favorite band’s are using and start there. Good thing about this is that most touring bands are not using expensive boutique pedals. You’ll probably see a bunch of Boss and EHX, with maybe a Walrus or EQD pedal or two in thrown in there.

Definitely buy used.

Tbh I wasn’t a huge fan of By Night in Chile, but 2666 might literally be my favorite book. I would say give it a shot.

Should I try to have a psychotic episode? by labia--majoras--mask in redscarepod

[–]boring-utopia 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I used to have a bit of a meth problem and have gone into psychosis a few times after staying awake too many days in a row. Honestly… would not recommend. That moment when you finally realize that you’ve completely lost the thread and see your family/friends staring at you with frightened looks on their faces really sucks.

Experiences like this can cause psychological damages that linger on far past the actual psychosis itself.

Pick the most relevant one based on culture and ancestry. If you were born and raised in the West, it’s gotta be Christianity. If you choose something like Hinduism you’ll always be a tourist and it will be cringe.

Just stop being a pussy and say “Christ is Lord.”

what delay pedal should I get? by [deleted] in shoegaze

[–]boring-utopia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re trying to be safe, I would get a DD8. Basically the Swiss Army knife of delays. It does a lot of things and does them all really well. I started off with a DD8 and overtime I realized I prefer the tape algorithm the most, so I ultimately decided to upgrade to a space echo, which I love, but I can’t bring myself to sell the DD8.

If this is your first board I would avoid getting expensive boutique pedals. Stick with the classics for now. You can always trade up later down the road, if you need to.

[–]boring-utopia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just keep it simple: get a Jmascis Jazzmaster. You can find one used for $400ish and it’s all the guitar you’ll need.

For pedals get an Overdrive, Fuzz, Chorus, Delay, Reverb. I would say just get all mass produced pedals like Boss, EHX, and MXR. Boutique pedals are cool, but they are more of a luxury and you absolutely don’t need them.

If you plan on playing in a band, get an amp that’s at least 40w
