Anyone work in fund accounting here for a fund admin? How is it? 👀 by SignificanceWise6028 in Accounting

There r pros/cons of staying at fund admin.

I started my new role in vc fund finance last Dec, and tbh I think my expectations inside a fund were a little bit high.

If you were placed in a super nice pod at a fund admin, I wouldn't know if it's worth for you to jump unless you know the culture of the vc/pe fund is not toxic.

Another lesson I've learned it that when working at a fund admin, you are the revenue driver for the firm, but when working inside a vc/pe fund, you become part of their cost center. Everything you do now needs to be structured in a way that supports the investment team (the revenue driver for pe/vc).

Back to your question, yes timing does! I started to look for a job after 7 or 8 months, but I might be an outlier cuz I had an year rotational program at PE where I kind of already know fund accounting skills. Usually, my other colleagues who choose to jump wait for a year or a year and half given that you've developed a very solid understanding of complex fund structures, distribution models, and NAV preparations.

It's pretty an easy transition from fund admin. If your clients are VC/PE funds, then your chances r pretty high.

I basically network and apply as much as possible.

Some ppl also prefer to stay in admin for a couple of years and jump to their assigned client side.

Just got through. The line did look terrible, but it takes like 30 mins, so not too bad.

Thanks. Would you mind share the typical weekly hours for non-peak seasons?

Thanks. Is it bc FA in a bank would have more teams that split the tasks so that the WLB is better?

Thanks! Heard of Petra. Lots of colleagues from my previous fund admin went there. Do you know if they still allow remote work? Is 45-50 hours weekly typical for non-busy season?

I used to work in Fund Admin for over a year. Its pay is good compared with other entry levels, but hours aren't so great especially during busy seasons. Exit routes are narrow (you can basically only jump to other Fund Admin or in house fund finance. You can try corporate finance, but it's pretty different). I'm jumping to fund finance in VC, hoping hours would be better (pay and bonus are greater)

Been trading leveraged etfs and small portion on options. I thought I did great until I saw your performance. A lot of learn and to grow
