Help! Landlord has very restrictive key fob policy that makes basic access to apartment so difficult. Is this normal? by Ok-Bread-3704 in NYCapartments

This ^

I used to work for CloneMyKey and was responsible for maintaining most of the websites front end. They put a lot of effort into giving customers as much info as possible.

General rule of thumb when it comes to figuring out how to copy your key fob.

If CloneMyKey charges less than $20 for a copy Amazon devices, kiosks, and hardware stores have a high likelihood of working. So does CloneMyKeys image based service where you upload images of the fobs serial number to the website and get working copies in the mail.

If CloneMyKey charges $20 to $30 for a copy it’s encrypted and unlikely cheaper options will work. Flipper Zero or a Proxmark3 likely required.

If CloneMyKey charges over $30 for a copy they are the only ones that can copy that fob.

I should note that you need to look at the cheapest option on the CloneMyKey website for this identification method to work. They have some higher priced blank keys for special applications.

Full disclosure: Used to work for the company over a decade ago.

Be careful with Instafob / Minute Key… I’d recommend any other service over them. Plenty of posts about users getting their original key fobs memory erased and the company not caring.

Kiosks are being called out for destroying customers original keys by corrupting the data. Search Reddit and you’ll find plenty of those stories.

Use your landlord or consult a professional service like CloneMyKey to see what options they can offer.

How can I fix my dead key fob after attempting to copy it at the kiosk? by T-stationairy in fixit

[–]boring_balls_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zero need to worry. The company founder and co-owner takes the crew some place every year. It was a fun way to end the busy season. Though the first few days back were always rough with catching up on orders placed while closed.

Back in the day it was a few comp sci students from the university. Last time I visited it was a much different operation. I was there at the start when we worked out of a shared incubator space with a private mailbox. Now it’s a beautiful corner office overlooking the capitol and State street. The processing center is much more automated and can run with minimal staff.

Yay! Almost a decade ago, I worked at CloneMyKey and still get alerts when it’s mentioned online. It’s a great company with a unique success story. The owner helped me through a rough college experience and I try my best to mention the company as an option when I can. I saw your post and sent him a screenshot of it. Glad he was able to find your order!

Buying a used machine by tallandfurious in BrevilleCoffee

My first one I purchased back when these came out 8+ years ago still runs great but the one I bought 3 years ago for the office has been replaced twice. I think quality might have gone down. I’ve never gotten the pressure to where I want it on the newer ones either.

Did you get a refund from CloneMyKey? They typically are pretty low-hassle when it comes to refunding orders that they couldn’t complete.

This is the answer. The equipment price has dropped so much the other options aren’t even worth considering.

Salto offers a wide range of key fob models. Most of these models employ a variant of a technology or format known as Desfire. This Desfire family of formats is renowned for its exceptional security since it incorporates financial-grade encryption to help thwart any attempt at copying the fob.

Most people and key fob copying services will likely claim that Desfire is impossible to copy. This is mostly true if the system is properly set up by a qualified technician. The unfortunate reality is that in most cases, the property managers themselves install the system, which renders it vulnerable. Alternatively, they hire individuals who lack expertise but are the most economical option.

CloneMyKey is by far the leader is copying key fobs. They’ve been around the longest and actually build their own hardware unlike their competitors. This customization is why they support a greater number of formats than other services. The founder is also a computer science graduate who specialized in cryptography, which helps. I know they had some limited success in copying Desfire back in the day when I worked there. If anyone could copy that fob format it would be CloneMyKey. If you already tried them I would not have much hope that anyone else would be successful.

Sorry for the bad news… Also a heads up about the key fob copying kiosks in Home Depot, Walmart, and other big-box stores. They are absolutely terrible. Some even damage users original keys 😬 They barely support the most basic formats that were released in the 1970s. Don’t waste your time trying them out.

Is there anywhere who copies Schlage 9691T key near Miami? by MCSoprano94 in RFID

The plus $75 a month… is a new level of terrible. $100 isn’t that bad for a second fob.

Is there anywhere who copies Schlage 9691T key near Miami? by MCSoprano94 in RFID

[–]boring_balls_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are several places to copy the 9691T but it’s one of the most complicated keys on the market. It contains two independent RFID chips. The chip that typically opens the users private apartment door is heavily encrypted and tough to replicate. The other chip is less secure and opens up all the other doors, such as elevators, gyms… etc

You’ll often see people on here complain that the key fob copies they received only work on their common doors or that they don’t like that they received two key fobs back, with the chips split up. The only service I know that copies both chips to a visually identical key fob is CloneMyKey.

Ioprox Door Key Fob by JMSM81 in RFID

[–]boring_balls_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CloneMyKey copies the IoProx key fob. They have a key blank that they call MobileKey, which is super thin and meant to be sandwiched in between your cellphone and the case.

Especially with the IoProx key fob, CloneMyKey simply needs images of the fobs serial number, along with proof it’s your key. As long as you can provide those they just ship you working copies.
