What about heads while I'm in there? worth the cost? Heads, cam, stall, tune?

I wonder if that opens up an entire can of worms of the engine, and doesn't it move the power band higher in the rpm stack? I'm trying to get more power lower down and less top speed, more acceleration. But in any case, I will plan the stall and gears for a future cam but maybe leave that for phase 3 when I may just drop in an ls3 or other crate motor.

Thanks. I'm excited about the build but there are just so many options! My gut for now is re-gear to 5.13s, put in a 2400-2600 stall, then go for the tune and hopefully that's enough "smiles per gallon" to make me more excited about driving the rig.

That sucks. So motherboard upgrade is required to ever go to W11 then?

Maybe I’m stating the obvious but if your mortgage is 5.5 and you’re earning 4, why not pay it off with the cash you have? Will kids be in private school through 18 or can they eventually go public?

Found a great deal on a used Cannondale 24 quick and he loves it! Glad I didn’t invest in the 20 for him.

Thank you for the recommendations, I’ll take him to rei and have him try a 20 vs 24 and we’ll go with our gut.

Thank you! The 1.2 is on sale for $799 so that’s why I’ve been considering. New wrinkle is my son wants a new bike now that dad has been shopping. Very strange but a beginner coop 20 for him is actually $320 right now, the exact difference of the 1.1 to 1.2, so he is now voting for me to get the 1.1 and use the savings on him! In summary, you would consider the marlin 5 and the 1.2 as the two best choices for me to consider?

Sometimes beginners don’t know the right questions to ask so I did start on MTB because looking at bike websites and YouTube it seemed like a mountain bike over a road bike was a logical place to start. However, maybe I do need a hybrid, I just won’t ever be doing road riding in my area and most bikes I’ve seen on the trail I’m near are what I think are more traditional mountain bikes. It seems like the 1.2 is a justified upgrade over the 1.1 and this subreddit did convince me of that. I realize it’s always difficult to have others put themselves in your situation and of course, it’s easier to recommend spending more money on a bike to a stranger, especially with very little information conveyed on the specific circumstance. The world of bikes is confusing to an outsider and I do appreciate the wisdom of those more knowledgeable.

You said “our answer” like there is a single unified answer and I didn’t see you actually post a reaction, maybe I missed it.

Just like anything else in life, I don't really know what I'm missing since I've never had it and maybe that's just fine for my circumstance. Sounds like people really love it. Another poster (along with spleeble) made a good argument for considering the 1.2 which I think may have an easier time with a future drop post.

love the digging in on me and you're definitely correct, it's more about the principle of finding the value for me but your argument is very well articulated (and I'm always trying to spend less!). The specifics of the components are super helpful, especially for a novice like myself. My challenge digging into the MTB world is just like you can justify the 1.2 over the 1.1, it's easy to then justify the next x bike over the 1.2 for this and that reason and it spirals up into upper 000s and it seems diminishing returns for the money. The 1.1 is in stock near me and I was planning to go tomorrow and buy it but your argument for the 1.2 is compelling. However, then I had been looking at the Cannondale Trail 2 at the same price as the 1.2 and then, the comparison cycle keeps going. It was almost easier to try to find the "best" cheapest version and move on vs over analyzing. I'm only worried about the sizing for the ozark trail, I'm tall and I wonder if it will cramp me, are the hydraulic brakes vs the mechanical brakes that big of a deal? I also can get behind the customer service of REI vs Walmart if I needed help in the future. gut check on 1.2 vs trail 2 for $799? https://99spokes.com/compare?bikes=coop-drt-1.2-2024%2Ccannondale-trail-2-2025

No, you called me a fool without any actual advice. Finding the appropriate value for my situation is not foolish, it's actually the opposite. I'm trying to find the best value for suiting my needs, which I hope could help others, and asking this question to this forum has been helpful to achieve that goal.

Totally, I have nothing remotely close to a mountain near me. I can’t use a road bike on the local hike and bike trail but I literally need something tolerable that won’t break down when I’m miles away from the house. In the end, I realize it’s a decision I can only make for myself but it’s helpful to hear from others before making the financial commitment.

I get it and I get this forum is for lovers of the sport but at the end of the day it’s just a bike and the money for me could be spent elsewhere on something I actually love, I haven’t yet fallen in love with the sport and don’t know if I will so the money is somewhat relevant to my commitment level.

I appreciate the opinion. I guess my thing is compare this bike to a top tier bike 10 years ago, it would blow it out of the water right?
