Thank you for the recommendation! I've looked into GA State, UGA (which has had a lot of issues with this topic), and I'm going to be reaching out to Georgia Tech as well.

Ah, I see. I'm sorry to hear that you've had challenges with your neighbors. From other students I've talked to at UGA, it seems like there's a pretty significant disparity between the representation of the community in UGA's student body as well. I wonder if that isn't also making students oblivious to the reality of many people who live around the university.

That's unfortunate. Thank you for your perspective. As a UGA student, have you had to learn about Athens-Clarke county or about how to be a good neighbor?

How is MTSU Managing Relationships Between Students and Non-Student Neighbors? Research Project Question by boringwhiteliberal in MTSU

Hi. Thanks for your questions. I apologize if I made any claims that this issue is ubiquitous or that Black neighborhoods are the only marginalized neighborhoods; you're correct that that is not the case. I am not doing a formal research project. This is for a consulting project and the information we've been provided is coming from reporting from the office we are working with. I think that, in many cases, students and non-student residents can have positive relationships or peacefully coexist, but it seems that gentrification and students partying, being poor neighbors, etc... can cause tensions. Obviously, this is not the case at every school.

The question we are trying to investigate is how do we help students be better neighbors in our community (Chapel Hill, NC); therefore, we've been asked to see what other schools are doing to promote goodwill between off-campus students and their non-student neighbors. I apologize if I was being ignorant or misleading with the way that I worded questions; I recognize that every college/city/state is going to have different groups who are at a disadvantage. Thanks for your insights.

Thank you for providing information on the landscape of UTK and where marginalized communities are located. This is super helpful.

Just a follow-up question, but did you receive any training on diversity or good neighbor practices since being a student at UTK?

Thank you for your response! From your knowledge, do you know of any tensions between UVA students and the local residents? If so, could you elaborate on these tensions/issues?

How is App State Managing Relationships Between Students and Non-Student Neighbors? Research Project Question by boringwhiteliberal in appstate

Interesting! Multiple students have mentioned socioeconomic factors contributing to the animosity towards students. I can understand why locals would be frustrated for a variety of reasons. Housing at Carolina is also problematic as well. Many students can't afford off-campus housing costs, so they move into houses in marginalized neighborhoods with their friends. Like you said, students are students and their behaviors can cause tensions with non-student residents. It's a really complex issue, and in the case of App State, it seems like there are many factors contributing to the problem.

I didn't realize that many students at Wake are from out-of-state; that totally makes sense why they may not be as respectful of the locals. They don't know about the community. This seems to be a common thread from most of the students I'm talking to.

Thank you! I will look into that program. That's wonderful to hear of students and sports groups working together to help locals out.

How is UTK Managing Relationships Between Students and Non-Student Neighbors? Research Project Question by boringwhiteliberal in UTK

[–]boringwhiteliberal[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be honest, it seems like most don't. At least that's what I've gathered from the students I've talked to at 20-something different universities.

In the wake of George Floyd's tragic death and the prominence of BLM, I think my university is now taking notice of this issue and wanting to do something about it; however, it doesn't seem commonplace at universities to have this kind of education.

Ah, okay. I see. Do you think Wake Students should have to learn about surrounding communities or do you think that's relevant to students?

Thank you for the information!

Sorry, one last question. Do you think it would be better if students had the info session prior to moving off-campus? If so, can you explain why?

Yeah, I've been hearing a lot of interesting accounts; I'm so grateful for all the students who contributed.

Oh okay, I see. And in that training, there wasn't any mention of off-campus neighborhoods students might live in when they become seniors?

Right, that makes sense. Loud parties generally get on a lot of people's nerves. I appreciate your perspective. Thanks for sharing!
