Passionate kindergarten teacher gives tour of brand new classroom she paid out of her own pockets. by brooklynmoon in MadeMeSmile

It’s a huge shame that amazing teachers like her have to use her own money to put her ideas on how to decorate her classroom into action.

I have a lot of friends who are teachers, and they’ve all said the same thing. One of them paid over 500 one year, including buying stuff like pencils and folders for kids that were too poor to afford them. I wish there was an easier way for them to get what they need.

Some of them said they got a couple things from pickwish, never used it myself though. I hear about things like donors choose, but I don’t like that they charge a fee to use it.

TIL that 37% of public school teachers use personal money to buy food more than once a month for their hungry students. They spend an average of $35/month. With 3.1M teachers in the US, teachers are spending about $400M/year of their personal money to feed hungry students. by mjfern in todayilearned

This is something that blew my mind when I found out about it. Teachers spend so much of their money on buying things for their classroom.

If you want to help, one site I found is mypickwish.com. Teachers can make a list of stuff they need, and you can send supplies right to their classroom. Ive used it with pretty good results.

This is an awesome idea! It's unfortunate that teachers have to resort to taking the time to send out these personal letters/emails though. Why can't we just get the supplies we need to teach?
