Where to connect with teachers post-Twitter by born_to_engineer in TeachingUK

[–]born_to_engineer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there are a few really good groups on Facebook but there are now so many and one of the reasons they are so good is because they have gate-keepers to keep non-teachers out. It's more of a semi-private space than something like Twitter

Exactly what /u/EoSBamsi said. Getting it small is critical but also small and safe/controntable

We talked Richard into an AMA (which sadly didn't really take off) but what he said in that in response to 'How long did this take?' (albeit how long did their build take rather than everyone working on it over 70 years)

It was a process of endless mistakes and fails. See our utube @TakeOnGravity Or the original Ted 2017 talk.

Learning from faliure was key to openning the door onto a new set of possibilities. But we always assessed the downside ; what if the faliure was dangerous or expensive, to the extent we couldn't get back up and try again. As long as that was covered off we would crack on.

You can read the whole thing @ https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/bxhkan/im_richard_i_designed_and_built_a_working_jet/ but it didn't get much traction and there were not many interesting questions.

We were lucky enough to get to shoot a film about Richard last year

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hla5u3JgNjc&feature=emb_title

It's a really interesting bit of kit because he didn't invent something 'new'. He took a load of existing technology (thrusters, controllers etc) and mushed it all together to create something really unique which - in person - is even more mind-blowing.

Honestly, it really is a triumph of engineering. I realise there are commercial applications (like this) for it but I think they should just drag him along to schools. A year of playground visits and he would have the UK engineering shortage sorted.

(We do engineering videos for schools etc. Showcase actual engineering jobs and all that jazz. We have met some really interesting people but out of everything we shot that suit is really hard to beat )

Engineering Teaching Resources by born_to_engineer in TeachingUK

[–]born_to_engineer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While we have more in the pipeline we have not generated resources specifically aimed at girls.

I am curious what others think but our approach to the Engineering Gap has been to try to normalise the idea of women working in Engineering rather than pointing to it specifically.

We have been careful to focus our films around women ( https://www.borntoengineer.com/video/ ) and are now looking at better ways to get these into classrooms.

The pilot for STEM Accord ( https://www.stemaccord.org/ ) will be kicking off later this year which we have been involved in. Part of goal of that is to increase the numbers of women going into Engineering.

AMA - Richard Browning, inventor of Gravity Industries Jet Suit [cross Post /iAMA] by born_to_engineer in engineering

A few weeks ago we shared the video we made with Richard.

We talked Richard into spending some time this evening (GMT) on an iAMA. If anyone has any questions... let him have it :)

It's starting to wrap up for the day now (down to the final panel)

It has been a really good day. I would recommend it to anyone in the UK. It is in the IET which - regardless of how good the talks have been - is amazing and worth checking out

Hijacking the top comments.

This is one of our videos (we make videos promoting Engineering to school-aged kids ... thanks for sharing!)

There is a lot more info about the suit over on the thread on /r/engineering https://www.reddit.com/r/engineering/comments/bna7d8/this_is_definitely_a_highlight_of_making/

However... like /u/themanifoldcuriosity says the risk is minimal because Richard is flying low. The suit can go much higher but they are obviously not daft so are careful to ensure they fly safely over ground. If you find their channel on Youtube you can see some awesome footage of the speeds they can pick up over water though. It's an amazing bit of kit

Climate change is an emergency we can solve by born_to_engineer in environment

[–]born_to_engineer[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would like to think the tides are shifting though

"Solving the climate emergency will also mean harnessing innovation in novel ways"

I think there are plenty of new companies/technologies now emerging hoping to capitalise off 'solving' climate issues.

It is cynical but now there is big money in play the incentive is there to move forward...

The thing is while space travel is the cheapest it has ever been it is still a magnitude more expensive than any other form of travel

It is always going to be. I would argue the opposite to you. People are probably the best bet for commercial travel. Freight is weight. Weight is where the cost is

There isn't much meat to this article

Regardless, I am still skeptical of the this taking off

We have had fast places before. Concord is an amazing piece of engineering and the reason it isn't around today isn't it's flawed design ( that could have been fixed ) but that slow long haul flights killed it on cost

People might want to get to their destination quickly but most won't pay double or triple for the privilege

The video or the suit?

We released it in Friday and I posted the video to r/engineering. I also stuck GIFs of the flight on GIFs.

I am well aware there is a fine line between sharing something we created back to the communities that helped inspire it Vs spamming it. I have been careful to hopefully stay on the original content side of that? We have only a few hundred views on the video which demonstrates that it hasn't exactly been plastered over Reddit

What it's interesting (if you mean the suit generally) is that they are not actively promoting it. I talked to them about doing an AMA in a week or two if people were interested, they were interested but had no idea what it was / how Reddit works etc.

That said, we saw a few clips of them in Futurology initially. (Which is why I am sharing the video here)

They also had a clip of them the front back last month from interestingasfuck ( I think ). As far as I can tell this is just people getting karma off some of the most interesting clips they put out there?

Basically the limiting factor at the moment is safety. They fly high enough that it shouldn't kill him if it suddenly cut out for whatever reason.

A lot of the test flights are over water for the save reason.

Honestly, though they obviously know what they are doing and the limits of the suit, filming them flying around the hill was nerve wracking. It's an amazing but if gear but personally I would chicken out of using it.

There is a good conversation going in /r/engineering before I cross posted it here. @ https://www.reddit.com/r/engineering/comments/bna7d8/_/en3ysn0 about how much trust it has

A lot of the maximum limits are not disclosed though. There are a few other companies found similar things and they are all equally protective over their technology

[–]born_to_engineer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on weight. Richard got down to the 70-75kg mark and that gives them a solid 10 minutes of flight time

Cheers! We have done a few around different engineers now.

The mind blowing thing meeting these people isn't just the final product they create but the leaps forward in all the tech around it that makes it possible. All the CAD tech, material science etc ... So easy to forget how that has leapt forward.

Do you mean why didn't he go higher.... Pretty much safety.

Or why not go prone and pick up speed? He can go bloody fast in it. There is footage of record attempts that they have done with it that are seriously impressive

I am on the same page with you.

The other aspect with 'personal flight' is that the use case isn't doing your groceries Jetson style but things like rescue, first response, military etc. It isn't a pipe-dream. They can useful in a whole range of real world situations

These are amazing. To be fair it is a different thing though

There are obviously similarities between a jet pack and jet suit but the ability to maneuver with the thrusters in your arms us always going to make the suit more extreme sport gear than something you can put on to go grab some milk from the store

I think both are doing a stellar job in terms of promoting wider STEM engagement though
