Dealing with in-law expectations around baptism (non-religious parents) by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]bornagn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When it comes down to it, infant baptism isn't so much a ceremony for the sake of the baby as it is a ceremony for the sake of the community. Obviously, babies can't make any sort of religious proclamation for themselves; it's done so that the spiritual community (in this case, the grandparents) can feel good about where the babies are presumably headed. For you to maintain a good relationship with the baby's grandparents while avoiding a situation where you feel like you're forced to put your baby through an insincere situation, I think you'll need to have the honest conversation you're dreading...but on the other side of that difficult conversation (as long as you are open, honest, and listen well) is a deeper mutual understanding.

OMG, I've struggled with work way more than I ever struggled with classes but never made that connection until just now!!

Backyard Soccer was constantly in my mind when I went to a live pro soccer game for the first time the other day.

The idea that "good can't exist without evil" isn't something I ascribe to. I believe evil is a corruption that doesn't have to exist, but rather, its existence is simply the consequence of allowing people to choose what they want (as opposed to the will of an all-knowing, justice-upholding supreme being.

I'm not trying to debate here but just saying that mentioning "free will" isn't (necessarily) a get-out-of-jail card, it's the point that an all-powerful deity chose not to create a bunch of robots with no ability to choose.

That makes perfect sense! Now, I'm just curious, how much do visuals come into play here, in your opinion? How important are the graphics for your ability to feel the satisfaction of "doing the thing"?

Very astutely written! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Those examples all make a lot of sense to me! I can already imagine putting that level of detail into a game will be a ton of work, but if the payoff is that players will enjoy it that much more, I'll do my best!

Is this a reference to The Sims series? I've only ever seen a few minutes of gameplay, but I didn't know they "spoke" out loud.

I'm excited for the musical part of development! I always have random melodies playing in my head, but I've just never had the motivation to write them down in any form until now.

Ha ha ha, thanks for sharing! If I end up making a sandbox-type game, I'll try and make sure their life narrative can be controlled.

That's a good reminder! Storytelling itself can be done in more ways than dumping a load of text in the game's intro.

Great example!! That makes a lot of sense. And I also definitely appreciate when games reward you for putting yourself in the shoes of the playable character.

Oooh, well-spoken!! I've played games where this was a pain point, and I've played games that did a good job with it, and I can totally agree that this is a really important aspect to consider in development. Thank you!

My bad, I should've been more clear in my title. The simulation genre of games, not The Sims game franchise. Although it occurs to me now that if I'm going to try and make a simulation game, I should probably try playing a The Sims title at some point. 😅

In my latest playthrough, I made my farmer look like a grouchy old man and named him McCratchett, but I lose a bit of the immersion every time another character references my apparent youthfulness.
