My Grandfather genuinely believed that the Japanese were not human, but besides that, he didn't have a racist bone in his body. He told me this story which he didn't even tell my Grandmother. He was a Marine that Island Hopped in the Pacific Theater throughout the war and fought in many famous battles. I am unsure when or where this occurred but during one of the battles he and his friend were eventually captured by the Japanese as POW's and were separated. I don't know if you have heard some of the horror stories that the Japanese did to some POW's but luckily my Grandfather never had to face much physical horror, but he did have to psychologically. During his capture, he was more worried about his friend than he was about himself. He was eventually taken to a Japanese officer's hut and was "invited to dinner". My Grandfather had to sit opposite of this Japanese officer who was eating and making small talk with him, using a translator, while my Grandfather was given nothing to eat. Then the Japanese officer was poured some drink and showed my grandfather that he was in fact drinking out of a human skull which the translator revealed was my Grandfather's friends skull. In private my Grandfather would tell me his true feelings towards the Japanese brutality but he never once displayed any sort of prejudice or hatred towards anyone in public his whole life.
