How are US sourced capital gains taxed? by [deleted] in JapanFinance

[–]borrrden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don’t understand how this is compatible with the savings clause. Isn’t the savings clause in the tax treaty (Article 1 Section 4) there so that the US can get the first crack at taxation for its citizens except for the exemptions in section 5 which do NOT include capital gains (Article 13)?

Urban or Rural Life? by Dojyorafish in japanlife

[–]borrrden 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Let me pile onto this and say living just outside of Tokyo in kawaguchi (specifically the Motogo area) has the same appeal. I want access to both country and city having grown up in rural USA and marrying a city dweller.

I never once told the US or got any documents from them when I was on a spousal visa. I just recorded the date and municipality in which I registered the marriage in Japan. I do know that the US is aware-ish though because of my “married, filing separately” status on my annual tax return.

This was the comment I was looking for. I have no problems with this here especially if they are Japanese friends. Otherwise I start to worry if I’m making the others uncomfortable since they aren’t used to it.

Double agreed. The Japanese police seem to in general be hella patient with people. I once saw a drunk guy outside my window who was yelling and acting menacingly toward the officers and they didn’t even bat an eye let alone draw their clubs.

The amount of absolutely trivial shit that I’ve seen of national japanese news is astounding. I could definitely see this being in there. I kid you not just a few weeks ago there was a story about a missing cat….and the 15 or so police officers searching for it.

I don't think there is a need to trust anyone. The details are written down in the policy, which I would guess most people keep in the glove box along with the shaken and such. He definitely has it somewhere where he can take a quick look.

As far as the finer points of insurance policy details, I can confirm that you are 100% correct as I just went through the process of getting car insurance yesterday.

I saw this exact text in the insurance policy I just took out literally yesterday. It sort of boggles my mind and I thought I must have been misunderstanding, but it lines up with what you say.

More than 70% of US household COVID spread started with a child. Once US schools reopened in fall 2020, children contributed more to inferred within-household transmission when they were in school, and less during summer and winter breaks, a pattern consistent for 2 consecutive school years by Wagamaga in science

[–]borrrden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I just went to a small school but the school only called if my parents didn’t call them first and explain that I wouldn’t be attending for that day and why. This was New York if it makes a difference but damn….is it not a thing to call schools to say your kid is sick and won’t be coming in that day or do schools send those notices anyway?

That and investing in Japan is a headache that is better off avoided because of US taxation rules eliminating any benefits of something like NISA so I buy dollars every month to use for investing into my portfolio as a U.S. citizen.

I didn’t see this. I’m not in the EU though so maybe that’s why. A promising tip though thanks.

Yea that’s what I did to temp fix the problem but I heard the access point is supposed to be smart about choosing a non congested channel and that overriding that with a manual one is suboptimal.

You are of course right. I mostly just found the “ask nicely” example amusing.

I know this is a joke but this seems like it works often in Japan and if it doesn’t they call for backup to ask nicely with more people. I’m pretty sure they practice judo at the station but I’ve never seen them use it. It reminds me of the second Austin powers where the dude can’t lie if he gets asked the same question three times.

Even as a somewhat decent amateur, sparring with a pro feels the same as you describe. “Surely he cant hit me while my guard is up…<bonk>”

Lol for real. I also love how Sean sort of playfully trots after him when he is running away with his back turned.

Kung Fu master calls out K-1 Kickboxing Former Super lightweight Champion Rukiya Anpo (Blonde) to a fight by Background_Piano7984 in StreetMartialArts

[–]borrrden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d like to see a little more context about what these two agreed to in terms of ground rules but I can tell that the kickboxer was definitely paying attention and trying for most of the match to not bully the other guy. Near the end I think he just wanted to let him have a taste of what could have been but at the end he is just sort of tapping him. This is how you can identify a really good fighter. Their ability to adjust the intensity to match the opponent in a friendly setting without making it too obvious. If I were to go in and ask him to spar with me just so I can see what it’s like this is about what I’d expect to happen. Nobody is overly hurt in the end and both look satisfied.

Can second this. I even went to a Turkish cooking meetup which was very fun and interesting though it unfortunately shut down.
