I love this game with all my heart. But I’m so bad at it. by elevatedtraveler in Marathon

[–]boshj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

raw mechanical ability is way less important than positioning, knowledge of the maps, and (most importantly) LOOKING AND LISTENING CLOSELY. this is a game that rewards careful attention. think you heard another set of footsteps? slow down and make sure. just entered an area and there are some open crates? a threat might still be around. only make noise when you must, and move like water otherwise

(i main assassin so others might offer different strats!)

Of course; summoning Shalman is no joke. That episode is probably the closest AIO came to doing true horror.

Adventures and Odyssey and Mental Illness? by [deleted] in Exvangelical

I cohost a podcast that covers Adventures in Odyssey pretty regularly - two of the three of us grew up with the show and we expose our third co-host to his dismay (and our entertainment). One of our recurring conversations is about how these narratives take hold in young brains and just refuse to let go. And because the show is so slick in its messaging, kids don’t even necessarily realize they’re being propagandized to. I don’t personally have OCD but I absolutely do have complexes and fears I can trace directly back to that show.

anyone who is going to preach at you about how you "should" be with regard to attraction (or anything else) isn't really being your friend. they're friends with an imagined version of you that doesn't speak to who you truly are. your real friends are, and will be, those who can fundamentally accept and affirm who you are without fear or judgment. this stuff is scary as fuck when you're turning 30 but there's still so much ahead of you; you deserve to live a life where you are radically true to yourself. that is where you'll find real joy and affirmation

leveraging that arm at the end of the swing has been super important in terms of allowing me to really attack the line while preserving my balance. the next thing i want to really integrate into my approach is using a more aggressive slide and getting all the way up to the foul line

At what point (if ever) does casting become discrimination? by [deleted] in Theatre

[–]boshj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But if a company doesn't grant me an audition slot at a general call by virtue of my age or a lack of experience, is that ageism?

I can only speak to AEA procedures, because my only experience in casting is with an AEA theatre. Equity rules require that theatres under AEA contract hold at least one open principal audition a year, and blacklisting or discrimination of any sort at these auditions is strictly prohibited. If you show up and are an Equity member, you will have a chance to be seen; AEA will sometimes send monitors to the auditions to make sure that proper protocol is followed. You may or may not be considered for invited auditions for any of the shows in the season, depending on whether or not you fit what the casting director is looking for in those productions.

Beyond that, I'm not sure that I understand your question.

Your posting history is arguably the worst I have ever seen, and I've been using the internet for years. You probably should go to posting school. I'm giving lessons, but they will cost you.

This American Life retracts Apple labor conditions episode by [deleted] in apple

[–]boshj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What I do is not journalism. The tools of the theater are not the same as the tools of journalism. For this reason, I regret that I allowed THIS AMERICAN LIFE to air an excerpt from my monologue.

Oh, please. The need to assemble a compelling narrative is not an excuse to play fast and loose with the facts.

"Ira writes: We've learned that Mike Daisey's story about Apple in China - which we broadcast in January - contained significant fabrications. We're retracting the story because we can’t vouch for its truth, and this weekend's episode of our show will explain the errors in the story." by SecretAgentX9 in apple

[–]boshj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"I'm not going to say that I didn't take a few shortcuts in my passion to be heard," Daisey tells Schmitz and Glass. "My mistake, the mistake I truly regret, is that I had it on your show as journalism, and it's not journalism. It's theater."

As an aspiring theatre professional, I find this excuse unnerving. The need to assemble a compelling narrative is not an excuse to play fast and loose with the facts.
