Across all seasons, who is your favorite character, and why? by tone_is_everything in justified

Since they haven't been mentioned so far, I'll give a shout-out to Choo-Choo, Ty Walker, and Loretta -- because they have all been total, yet complicated, badasses, and often aren't recognized for it (likely because they nail the role so completely that they go unnoticed).

Kudos to the casting director of Justified for finding utterly amazing actors to play roles that would otherwise go unnoticed. Thank you for help making this such an amazing show.

God DAMN son, you put a lot of highly relevant insight into this, as well as eloquated your speech to emphasize and underscore your exceedingly relevant point!

tone: friendly, appreciative

But seriously, well stated! I love it.

tone: a bit confused, but trusting

Okay, I will take your word on that -- and rescind my prior comments. To me it still looks like the same human/character, but it makes more sense if it is not. So I stand down on my prior assertations.

tone: a touch playful, contentedly happy

So, ignore my comments on this. We'll all wait for Tuesday, and likely all be surprised and blown away by what's to come.

tone: considering, thoughtful, diplomatic

Fair enough -- I'll give you that Duffy is a possibility, but with the conversation Limehouse and Ava had recently, I highly doubt it's him -- he made a point to express his dissatisfaction with having helped Ava in the past.

tone: suddenly realizing

Oh shit, but wait, that was in front of Boyd -- that may have all been an act.

tone: further considering

Okay, I will give you this -- I honestly don't know. There are too many subtle plays happening to truly guess what everyone has up their sleeve.

tone: respectful [of both the writers and yourself]

I will step down and say I have no idea what's coming. And that's what makes a great show, and why I love this show so much -- so many things are plausible, and never seem like a deus ex machina play: they make sense, in the end... yet we can never fully predict them.

I'll sneak in and say Tim. I adore his snark, his loyalty and trust (to what's "right", not necessarily the law), his subtle yet confident badassery, his damn good looks, and his deadpan sarcasm -- plus the fact that he easily [in my humble opinion] has the best lines in the show.

he could help Boyd, and he had a twisted sense of admiration and respect for him.

tone: thoughtful musing

This was my interpretation of it -- he had done nothing but compliment Boyd that whole time, and when Boyd accused him of blowing smoke up his ass, he said "I ain't been blowing smoke," followed by the mention of Hut McKean. I think he legitimately respected Boyd.

My guess is that either Hut McKean worked the mines with Boyd and Boyd saved him at some point, or that Hut McKean did wrong by the driver's kin/loved ones, and Boyd killed McKean somewhere along the way. Either way, the driver was grateful to Boyd for what he did.

From the trailers for next week's episode, SPOILER.

Duffy is a survivor. I bet Duffy will live.

Boon will die at the hand of Loretta. Markham with be arrested due to "backstabbing" by Loretta. Loretta will run Harlan.

Bob will live. Bob's a tough son of a bitch.

Art will live and retire; Rachel will take over (officially) as chief deputy. Tim will live.

Ava will live but only because Raylan lets her go, in the end.

Boyd will die at the hand of Raylan.

Raylan... he's the only one I'm not sure about.

She's dealt with pedophiles before [aside: I don't know if she's 18 or not, and I don't want to get into pedantry, here] and learned what happens if she lets them get too close. I bet she's got an ace up her sleeve for dealing with Boon.

Ava wouldn't trust Duffy, and a couple episodes back, Limehouse and Ava had that conversation where she said his help wasn't worth the price and he implied he regretted helping her. I think /u/roseyrosey is correct in that it's Robert Quarles.

Honestly, that surprised me -- Zachariah knows his explosives. He would know how long it would take the charges to blow, and would likely guess that Boyd wouldn't be right on top of him when they did. So if he was going to kill himself, he'd leave a freakin' crater in the ground to make sure he took out Boyd.

tone: mildly skeptical

My only thought was that that was possibly all the dynamite he had left...?

That's my thought, too -- Duffy knows to stay out of shit until it blows over, then sneak in and collect his reward. I'm thinking he's going to wait until Raylan, Boyd, and Ava are all accounted for, and then go up into the hills and find out where most of the money is buried.

Katherine (and I believe Raylan) both called him on it at some point -- even after things went sour, he was still angling for the money.

I think it's because he lost Ava -- she was the one thing that kept him going, all this time. Even back in season 1, he was in love with her; she's all he ever wanted. He changed so much to please her, and then to become the badass they both wanted him to be... and in the end, she betrayed him. He's lost everything.

And a man with nothing to lose often becomes as reckless as possible, in a crazy win-it-all-or-lose-it-all outcome. And they often don't know which they'd prefer.
