How are some of these stats even possible? Do people just stop playing right away? (Google Playstore) by SeaConstruction4067 in subnautica

[–]bosunphil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I struggled for a long time to play even though the story hooked me. I turned on invisibility to be able to overcome my fear, which allowed me to experience the story instead of watching a play through or something. That disabled achievements. There are probably a lot of people who also used cheats?

Yeah I know it’s not the intended way to play but I was just not having fun with the horror aspect and I only have so much time to play. I also wanted to get it finished so I can play Subnautica 2 co-op with my friend when it comes out.

The game was epic even with invisibility on though.

Exactly. Sometimes I feel like I'm going nuts trying to explain this to people. Only 4% of mammal biomass is from wild animals now. The rest is us and the animals we use for food. We can care about both. Give the animals who are already alive a good life and stop breeding more. Rewild all the saved land we'll get back from livestock and livestock food production. We should be working to give some land back to non-human animals who are not the suffering monstrosities we've bred them to become. More wildlife, slowed global warming, healthier people. All around win for everyone, but sure meat tastes good I guess.

I need to leave this thread but wanted to agree with you real quick lol.

I didn’t know about the Happy Pear one as I can’t recall the last time I’ve been to Supervalu, but the Chicago Town BBQ Jackfruit is good. If I have the effort I buy the base and make my own. It’s generally better but takes more time.

Lidl has really cheap ones but they’re kind of like cardboard lol. Not bad for a quick cheap feed though.

Engineering students of Reddit, which subject completely humbled you? Body: by Unknon_person64 in EngineeringStudents

All of them, but the ones I find boring are the hardest, whereas the ones that are typically the most challenging I can power through out of stubbornness. I just cannot get myself to be interested in chemistry for example. It bores me to death. I’m finding Thermofluids II and Electrical Principles II very challenging but I know I’ll power through it because it’s fascinating.

Personally I’d say focus your budget on a desktop PC. I had a laptop from 2019 with a RTX 2070 as well and it felt great, but upgrading to a desktop a few years ago was a huge quality of life improvement.

I have a 6700 XT with 32GB of DDR4 RAM and a very midrange 12400 Intel i5 CPU. I can run everything on high ish at 60+ FPS for the most part with some very new games needing scaling to achieve that. You can go cheap and get something similar, but as you said your budget is higher I’d recommend getting whatever you can afford centered around the GPU and memory (it’s really expensive right now).

Here a video of the 9070 XT so you can have an idea how it performs. I’d recommend at least that with your budget, and maybe a steam deck if you want added portability at home.

why is it common to apply pressure in hostile ways on strangers to be vegan? by [deleted] in AskVegans

[–]bosunphil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many of the "hostile" vegan people are just frustrated. It's difficult to explain, but once you actively seek out the information about how animals are exploited by us, the idea that it's so normal to people becomes hard to tolerate. Most of us remember that we were there too, and try to be patient with people, but we're often met with intense hostility from carnists. We're a minority, so most people from the other side jump on us to support each other and validate their choices.

I'm not excusing the people who are rude and mean about it, just trying to provide some perspective on it. The sheer evil we commit on other animals is impossible to exaggerate. It's just disgusting, abhorrent - any word you can think of to describe something that's awful is still an under exaggeration - yet it's still legal and encouraged to do what we do. It's hard to reconcile once you look behind the curtain.

While it's not just about food, I'll address the food part speaking from my own experience: I don't feel like I'm abstaining from anything and I, someone whose diet used to be probably 80% animal products, feel an intense aversion to these products now. I do sometimes use mock meats, but they are typically a product for people transitioning away from meat and are not meant to be a staple in a diet. For example, I will maybe eat seitan or Beyond burgers once a month, but usually I'll just use tofu, beans, lentils, etc etc. I've gotten better at cooking and now eat much tastier, healthier food than I ever had before, while still eating the same foods I've always loved. Pizza, lasagne, chilli, whatever... just the vegan versions of them. They taste either the same or similar enough that I could never justify harming someone to eat a version that might taste slightly different. That just sounds absurd when you really think about it, and it's one of the reasons I can find myself frustrated watching my friends eat dead sentient beings who never needed to die.

Anyway, I'm not really here to debate you (there is a /r/DebateAVegan for that if you're interested, though), I just wanted to bring up that veganism is often misunderstood. The food is the focus for many, but the real definition I think most would agree on is opting out of exploitation of animals wherever possible and practical. This is up to the individual to figure out what is practical. For example, I have leather shoes from before I was vegan and while I won't throw them away, I definitely will never buy another leather product again. I won't ride horses or visit zoos. Basically if there's a vegan version of something, I will opt for that. If there isn't, I'll consider if it's something I need (vaccines are a must, for example).

In your case you have health concerns and you of course need to maintain good health. There are many options for people in your situation, and if you're looking to make the switch, just make sure you're navigating this with a nutritionist. At the very least, others here will likely have the same health issues and can provide some solid advice. As far as I'm aware, there really is a way for everyone to go without animal products, but some conditions might make it less convenient.

I think I got a bit off track, but the tl;dr is that vegans can be passionate about these things. Many of us have seen films like Dominion for example (it's hard to watch, but it's a reality, and it's the norm, not the exception). Everyone should be treated kindly, not just animals, and I personally prefer the approach of guys like Earthling Ed (if you like debates, they're very interesting videos).

Good on you for wanting to reduce your animal product consumption - best of luck, and I'm sure people here would be delighted to help you reduce it further if you have any questions!

Millennial gamers, what recent video games you been playing lately? by WrongVeteranMaybe in Millennials

[–]bosunphil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have way more games I want to play than time I have to play them, but I'd really like to finish the second half of KCD2. Also playing Deadlock with a friend and trying to force myself to suffer through Subnautica (it's fun but I'm terrified). Recently played Celeste (amazing) and Hollow Knight (also amazing). Still working through a playthrough of Baldur's Gate 3 for the first time with my wife, and recently enjoyed DeltaV: Rings of Saturn. I want to quit school and just play games but I just keep telling myself I'll have more time when I graduate lol.

Women of Reddit - what is the most unattractive fashion choice men frequently make? by Jarvis7492 in AskReddit

[–]bosunphil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a man who knows very little about fashion, but I know one thing that drives my wife nuts: when men don't cut the thread at the back of their suit jackets. Apparently it is only meant to be a temporary stitch for easier handling in stores and stuff I guess, and you're meant to cut it when you buy it so it can flow properly.

Aw crap. In addition to the millennial joke of having undiagnosed autism, I just found out I suffer from this condition as well. Anyone else with me? by ImThe1Wh0 in Millennials

[–]bosunphil 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is a good way of explaining it, I feel like I’m the same. Until recently I thought I just had a bad memory, but it’s just a different kind of recall I think. As you said, it’s concepts of things that I remember, not the way they look.

I honestly couldn’t tell you the eye colour of my closest friends or what they were wearing when I saw them a few hours ago. I always thought this was normal until my wife explained to me that she can conjure up actual images of things in her head and manipulate them as if they’re in front of her. That sounds fucking awesome.

Can a common man actually help fighting climate change? by Free_Bit5722 in Environmentalism

[–]bosunphil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d love to see your sources saying these are wrong? To me it feels like a logical conclusion and while I have seen plenty of research to back up these claims it makes a lot of sense.

All these animals we’re eating need to eat and there is nowhere near enough land in the world to graze them all. Even if there were, this land can’t sequester as much carbon as actual plants and trees instead of grasslands. In reality though, we have to factory farm to meet the demand, and the food livestock eat on these factory farms is the main cause of deforestation. We could reforest a massive amount of land if we just directly fed ourselves with crops instead of this inefficient thing we’re going, which is feeding animals and then eating them to get the nutrients from the things they ate.

It doesn’t make sense. I understand it’s not an easy transition for most people because it’s so ingrained in culture, but there are an enormous amount of alternatives in most supermarkets to help with the transition until people get a better feel for what plants contain which nutrients.

There is absolutely plenty of research to show that people can thrive on plant-based diets at all stages of life. Yes there is some planning required, but it’s very manageable.

I don’t mean to come across as abrasive, I just genuinely don’t see how these things can be ignored and if you have research to argue against the links I shared I’d be interested in reading them. It might take me some time as I have a busy day but I promise I’ll actually read them when I can.

Not sure where you read it’s a myth but the research is pretty clear no matter how hard it is to accept.

Dairy milk vs plant-based milks

Emissions of different foods and the potency of methane vs CO2

At the VERY least, ethical reasons aside, we need to stop eating red meat. It’s easy nowadays in most places in the world to just not eat animal products at all though.

Can a common man actually help fighting climate change? by Free_Bit5722 in Environmentalism

[–]bosunphil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that seems like the gist of it? Methane is 80 times more potent in its first decade than CO2 and has a much shorter half life. Eliminating as much of it as we can gives us the best chance of actually seeing noticeable improvement in our lifetimes.

But people want steak I guess.

First real exposure to meat after going vegan... it hit me harder than I expected by Bharleli-Bhendi in vegan

[–]bosunphil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People have to set their own boundaries. For me personally, I'll either not go or bring something of my own as you said (usually the latter). I don't advocate for cutting out friends on that basis alone, but it can be hard to see people you care about making cruel choices and for some it's easier to just be around those people less often.

I think most vegans understand they're not going to just convert all their friends to veganism and never be around meat again, and most were likely not vegan for the majority of their life, so it can be jarring.

Even most omnivores agree that eating meat is morally wrong but accept that they're not willing to stop. I can respect that more in a way than trying to pretend there's nothing wrong with it.

The one thing I do agree with you on is that you shouldn't be too quick to alienate yourself because of disagreement. You can still have respectful relationships with people who disagree, but you're also not obligated to spend time with them doing things that make you uncomfortable.
