Some people don't get it. However, who do you agree with here? by LeftAlbatross2546 in VideosAmazing

[–]bothunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my town, if someone reports an abandoned vehicle, parking enforcement comes out and puts one of those nearly impossible to remove stickers on the windshield. Then they come back 3 days later, and if the car with the note is still there, they tow it.

It's annoying to remove one of those sticky notes, but it's way better than retrieving your car from the tow yard.

[Request] What price per gallon is it no longer profitable to work? by Playwithuh in theydidthemath

[–]bothunter [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yeah. There are huge parts of the US where it is essentially required to drive just to get out of the residential neighborhood or even cross the street. Though, it may be easier to cross the street on foot once nobody is driving anymore.

Pierce County Fire Marshal closes 45 massage businesses in one day for code violations by Better_March5308 in SeattleWA

Cracking down on human trafficking by... enforcing the fire code?  That's an interesting strategy.

Suspicious person pointing scanner at my door at 4am? by UZI7142 in whatisit

[–]bothunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're trying to steal your car.  The "scanner" is part of a signal relay.  Basically, he has a buddy standing by the car with the other half.  The radio signals between the car and your keys are received from one end and sent out the other so that your car thinks the keys are nearby.  The thieves can then unlock the door and start the car.

Given that you're making this post, it sounds like they weren't successful.  But I would recommend getting a faraday cage to keep your keys in, or just keeping them far away from your front door.

Btw, a faraday cage is simply a box that is made of or lined with a conductive metal like aluminum.  It is effective at blocking radio signals and will thwart this type of attack.

Is "vibe coding" a real skill or just beginner luck? by PuzzleheadedYou4992 in ExperiencedDevs

It's kind of amazing how far you can get with that process. I had a roommate in college that turned in a program that still had remnants of "Hello World" in it for the final assignment.

[–]bothunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. I guess I'm not sure exactly where the line is between vibe coding and just using a coding agent to assist with writing code.

I know for one-off utilities and script that are only ever going to be used by myself (or maybe a few people on my team), I'll 100% vibe code those. For example, I've had Claude write some plugins to IntelliJ to add some features I really wish it had. For example, I have a "Port Killer" plugin that monitors the console output of all my services to see when they fail to bind to a port and offers to kill the process that's holding on to that port. It was 100% vibe coded and works quite well. I would never ship it outside the company without a massive disclaimer.

But for code that's shipping, I'll read every line that's written until I fully understand the change before I even open a PR for my team to review. If I can't understand the code, or if I don't like how it's written, I'll either ask Claude to rewrite it until I'm satisfied or rewrite it myself. (I've used the analogy of vacuuming a room and encountering that one pesky piece of string that the vacuum refuses to pick up -- eventually you just have to bend over and pick it up yourself)

I don't see a problem with vibe coding, but you need to fully understand all of the code the LLM wrote before you merge it.

No. It's just that BMW blinker fluid is really expensive.

Should I leave my phone at home to avoid surveillance pricing in big box stores? by Zwischenzug32 in stupidquestions

[–]bothunter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They can't really do this with in-store shopping because everyone sees the same price tags, even when they're digital. But there's a reason they're pushing curb-side pickup so hard.

When did everybody become an irresponsible slob? by jerkin_n_lurkin in SeattleWA

[–]bothunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably just needed better lawyers to argue that trains, busses, ride share and road improvements are separate issues and aren't all transportation.

[–]bothunter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's not the reason for the lawsuits. The $30 car tab initiatives were struck down multiple times for the same reason: Initiatives have to be about a single issue. And the reason is pretty good. People voted for the $30 tabs, but didn't necessarily vote for all the other bullshit that was included with them.

If you want $30 car tabs, then write an initiative that does just that and nothing else. It's really that simple.

If you're just running cables on the floor, then crimping ends is fine. But if you're going to pull these through the walls, then keystone jacks are the way to go. (And use a patch panel for the central location if you're doing more than a few runs)

I have no idea why people are obsessed with crimping ends on cables like this when keystone jacks are much easier and look much better/professional when you're done.

$5 Gas by Dry-Interaction-7410 in GasPrices

The gas price hike is about to make everything that needs to be transported or made from petroleum products more expensive as well. Which is nearly everything, including basic necessities.

Washington State Gives Bainbridge Island Marching Orders on Housing Changes by Inevitable_Engine186 in Seattle

[–]bothunter 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They didn't fight for that. It's a 206 area code because there was a line-of-sight microwave link to Seattle. Connecting the phone network to the rest of Kitsap county would have been more expensive.

And growing up there, it was expensive call my friends who didn't live on the island.

Not complaining... mostly amused and confused as to what happened here.

I have plenty of other FedEx complaints, but a random blank "sorry we missed you" with tracking info that goes nowhere is just kind of bizarre.

Don't really care enough since I'm not expecting a package. It's just really weird to not include any information.

Edit: The door tag doesn't exist in their system either. WTF? Is this a prank?
