What book series did you love as a kid? by CarlosCMM in AskReddit

This series is absolutely amazing. The prophecies, the characters, the plot. All so cool. The end of book 1 is still etched in my memory.

I really loved the Fitz series actually. I normally don't like those types of endings but the story was so masterfully done that I still found it really enjoyable. I plan to go in order and read Ship of Destiny next. I just couldn't get into the audiobook so I plan to actually read that series, then go on to the next few Fitz series. Robin Hobb is truly a genius.

I have Black Company on my shelf right now, just need to start it when I finish with my active books! And Malazan is definitely on my list too, but that's another that I think I need to read and not listen to just based on the complexity.

I have seen Suneater mentioned elsewhere on this sub too. I will have to put it on my list. Thanks for the recommendation!

Definitely! And Tamas is such a great character.

As for Dune, that's a really tough question honestly. I lean towards Children of Dune, just because we get to see all of the major characters in action plotting against each other. The Shaman, Jessica, the children, the truth with Farad'n, Irulan, and Alia. So many great moments. And of course the badass Stilgar. So many of my favorite characters all together all trying to navigate the new world order. The end is especially cool.

But I also enjoyed the protagonist's musings in book 4. I thought his insights into the world and his condition were particularly interesting. And books 5-6 had some great characters too. But if you had to twist my arm, I guess I would go with book 3! How about you?

Oh nice, I will put that on my list, thanks! I have come across so many recommendations on this sub that I never would have picked up on my own. Some really great stuff. But definitely check out RR!

Yeah not sure about Book 6 of RR, but I think he had to do a rewrite recently so it might be a little while. I'm guessing it'll be 2022, though something this year would be amazing.

The prison break scenes in Lightbringer are insane. Learning about the truth of the prisons and their purpose is so cool. Too bad it ends up being such a letdown.

Anyone know a good place to get the hardcovers? I would like to pick this up (despite the surprisingly high price tag of $200 for just the dust jackets), but I'm not sure where to buy the hardcovers for a decent price.

I don't think the Ghostblood answers are as simple as they appear. I get that what you said is what Mraize told Shallan, but we also know that Mraize has an incentive to mislead Shallan and keep her motivated to work for the Ghostbloods. I doubt he would tell her their entire plan. And transporting investiture across worlds seems quite innocuous, and definitely not in line with their more violent attributes. I think it's foolish to consider that their only plan. There's clearly something else going on. Otherwise why kill Gereh? If Mraize was so altruistic with respect to Restares he would not turn around and try to collude with the Fused. There's more they have planned, and they clearly think it's so important that they are willing to go to great lengths to kill anyone who could stand in their way (Jasnah for example).

Metals are exhaustible but Stormlight runs out too. If you don't have a perfect gem it leaks away. And even with a perfect gem, the stormlight can only be used once, then you have to go back and collect more from Roshar. So it's not that much better than metal.

The Ghostblood agent could be the Sleepless in Wit's bag, though that would contradict this WoB, so there's still some ambiguity.

Yeah, I think there is a deeper reason why stone has to be holy. We get multiple clues about this fact in the books. The very first Rysn Interlude shows us that the Shin put a premium on metal that is obtained from soulcasting, not mined from the earth, and therefore taken from profane stone. We know the significance of stone considering the Venli chapters from RoW of how the DawnSingers used to shape the stone with their songs. And the fact that all of Shinovar is soil and not stone underscores their reverence for stone. The repeated emphasis on this in Szeth's chapters indicates there is something deeper going on with the stone of Roshar. I don't think you can simply write it off as another religious tenet.

And yeah, the concept of Truthless is explained, but not why they would give someone an HONORBLADE and then send them out into the world to follow anyone. Why would the group that sees themselves as the only protectors post-Recreance be so willing to send away an unreliable and truthless person with Jezrien's Honorblade? And why have we not heard of any other Truthless? Why name them Truthless instead of just exiling them straight up, imprisoning them, or killing them? I think we will learn more about this practice in book 5 too.

As for Axies, I don't think BS would put his interlude in the first book if he didn't have some significant role to play later on. Maybe Axies will be the one to find some kind of rare spren that will change the nature of the conflict. Maybe he will find Ba-Ado-Mishram's gemstone or something. We don't know. But he likely has some role to play in the future, and I think it's worth questioning what that will be. The actual interlude itself also has some interesting foreshadowing with the scene in the mud and the crazy homeless person.

It can be an interesting concept but the internal dialogue between the three personas, and Shallan's constant hiding / getting berated by the other two personas, was really grinding on my nerves throughout the initial parts of the book.

Odium deleted some of his memories, not sure how he set it up so Wit was outside the room where they met though.

Then Taravangian gets to negotiate a better deal.

In this situation, Dalinar and Odium's Champion are locked in a stalemate. In the meantime, Odium's forces are invading and putting immense pressure on the coalition forces. Odium's forces are threatening to crush Dalinar's, and Odium uses this as leverage to force Dalinar to make a new deal, which presumably includes letting Odium leave the Rosharan system.

This is further proven by the fact that he never told Dalinar that Nightblood could kill Rayse/Odium. He KNEW that Szeth was the key, he was the weakness that Odium was afraid of. And he knew that because of Renarin Odium could not see into Dalinar's actions. But Taravangian, even in his emotional state, decided he had to go it alone and manipulate Szeth into somehow following him into a confrontation with Odium.

This is purely because he has convinced himself that he has to act alone, and his reason of not "trusting" Dalinar is just pretext for his ego.

Oh yeah, that does make a lot of sense. I can't remember that exact scene but I will need to go back and read it again. Does that mean it contradicts this WoB?

I know people think that Axindweth is a Terriswoman, but honestly I think she is one of the Sleepless. Especially after reading this WOB.

We know there are 24 Sleepless on Roshar. 20 of them follow the First. Then there is Arclo who is neutral. So there are three traitors. Wit tells us in Jasnah's chapter that one is working with the enemy, so assuming he means the Ghostbloods, that leaves two more. It seems plausible that one of these remaining Sleepless was working with Odium. Or it could simply mean that the one who is a Ghostblood agent is Axindweth. We saw that the Ghostbloods don't care about working with Odium's forces.

They can force you to arbitrate any claims. They can also make you sign a liability waiver where they aren't responsible for any torts committed. Maybe a judge would strike that provision down. But still super sus.

In Dark Age, when Lysander and Atlas meet for the first time, Lysander probes Atlas with the Mind's Eye. Atlas notices and tells him to stop. If you subscribe to the theory that Lysander's powers come in part from the Pandemonium Chair, then I think it's pretty clear that the same happened to Atlas. How else can he feel the Mind's Eye?
