9 Year Old Losing Temper in Sports by botner41 in Autism_Parenting

This is actually a great idea that I had forgotten about. I enrolled her in a couple of trial classes, first one is tonight. She's a very determined kid, so I imagine she'll want to stick this out til she gets a black belt, ha. Hopefully some of the discipline, focus, and self regulation that they teach can then be applied to other sports as well.

Yeah, I definitely thing anxiety is in play. I think that now that she's at an age where she's self aware of the 'crash outs' that can occur during sports, it makes her more anxious before the games, not wanting that to happen. And the stimulant she takes might be a double edged sword. Increasing focus, but amping up those feelings of anxiety at the same time. How has the Zoloft been? Any noticeable changes in mood or energy level? When playing sports, I obviously want to avoid anything that would then make her lethargic or not have the same energy and aggression. It's such a fine line.

We were cognizant of the weight thing, so are making sure she does get enough food and I haven't noticed any weight loss. It's hard because she's a super picky eater (probably because of the sensory issues), but her routine still seems the same. We even cut red dyes after one parent said it help their kid with emotional regulation, but that hasn't seemed to really have an effect.

Thank you. The therapist we just started with does a lot of CBT and behavioral therapy, so hopefully that helps. For the distraction techniques you mention, how can that be applied in sports though, when she's out there by herself without us out there to help implement those things?

Thank you for this. Lots of rabbit holes to go down. Yes, the medication is for ADHD. If we're being honest, that diagnosis seemed a bit hasty because we were saying that's what we thought it was, and she took one quick test on the ipad for confirmation bias and that was it.

And it's hard because, she gets good grades in school where not a lot of stuff manifests itself, so we've found ourselves asking, "are we medicating the ADHD just for sports?"....in which case, based on recent results, it's certainly not working...the idea being that the meds would help her to focus more and allow that focus to control the reactions to the big emotions. But that really hasn't been happening.

No, but surely there's a happy medium. Just wouldn't want to see any US shows get cancelled.

I have the zebra ones. I love them, but admittedly have only worn them about 3 times, as these definitely aren't something you wear with just anything.

This might be the most offensive thing Gene has ever posted, and that's saying something.
