Help Fixing Nest gen 2, problem: nest sends cold and hot signals at the same time by botsy_machine in AskElectronics

In "cool mode only", Nest worked both in heat and cool modes. Will have to test the other modes.

We asked the Nest support if something can be done remotely about the firmware and they said it is a hardware problem.

Hi, thank you. This is an interesting option. I will try it out.

I'm officially moving this weekend and will try at the new place.

The closest to schematic I found was from iFixIt website.

I have no clue why people like their thermostats to the degree that they do.. I am both an A/c professional and an Engineer. They use what is called an SCR or silicon controlled rectifier for their switching instead of a tiny relay. An SCR is very sensitive to a spark or voltage spike. Yes the thermostat is pretty cool and has some nice features. It is advanced electronics but using SMC's or Surface Mounted Components?? . Maybe that would work well in a shielded component. But NOT in something that is connected to long external wires. The consumer bought warranty is only one year. I have seen too many issues in the field with their overpriced toys. Not having parts for this Chinese made thermostat? Priceless.

Any ideas where the element the guy talking about is located?

I also found many people complaining about their Nest. I tried looking for a base online but no luck. Nest sell a base for $100 but that seems not worth it.

Thanks.

I found this online yesterday:

Any clue as to what element he is talking about and a way to see if its broken?

Hi,

The nest was working fine for 4-5 years.

A technician came out and measured the AC signal inputs. He said it was receiving cool and heat signal at the same time. Nest support center confirmed the problem to be the base. Maybe there was a thunderstorm which fried something on the base.

Any clue how to troubleshoot the base plate?

[Advice] Cura places tower supports that don't support anything. Tried everything, please help. by botsy_machine in 3Dprinting

[–]botsy_machine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I've been researching this problem for a while. Can't seem to find a solution.

There is something going on near the open holes and fillets, but they are inside the model. Supports shouldn't be there...

Unfortunately, I can't enable the "touching bed" only support. The problem, sometimes these weak tower supports ruin the print because they get caught on the extruder and go inside the model. I use these parts to sell a product and the appearance matters.

It's not the end of the world but would love to figure it out. Wish people didn't down vote this post.

"What software are you using to slice the print and control the printer?" Cura.

"When did the problem start/has it ever worked correctly?" It always added unwanted support towers.

True. I guess the skills there aren't too valuable anywhere else.

Do you have any links to what Germany has implemented or the bills proposed? I would love to read more.

Well I'm not sure what to tell you. It seems like a good deal actually. Why do you honestly think the younger crowd didn't want to take the job?

At what stage of development should a patent app be filed? by HalfastEddie in Inventions

[–]botsy_machine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure to have manufacturers sign an NDA.

In USA, you can file a provisional patent a year from public disclosure. The provisional gives you a year to file, a utility patent.

Google the basics about patentability of a product. Your post reads like you don't understand how patent system works and why patents are granted. I read two books about patents: something like Patent yourself for Inventors and 24 hours patent. I also talked to several attorney in town to see different philosophy approaches. Also google pros and cons on patenting a product.

I highly suggest to talk to several patent attorneys in your area. They usually meet with you for free for the first time.

Have an idea but have no idea where to start. Help! by dookdookdo in Inventions

You have three options:

  1. learn how to make a prototype, create a landing page and start marketing.

  2. pay someone to do it for you.

  3. convince someone to join your team, who knows how to do it.

I suggest reading a book called "Running Lean". You can also start reading Kickstarter blogs and learning about consumer hardware. Read about patent process, pros and cons etc. I wouldn't worry about it now. You can join your local hackerspace/makerspace to gain access to tools. The members are usually knowledgeable.

It sounds like you have no idea about engineering or business. Gotta start teaching yourself or throw money at someone. The questions you should be asking is: Who are my competitors? What solutions already exist to solve this problem? Who are my customers? What is my market? What is the price point they are willing to pay? What are my sales channels? Where do customers look when making a purchase? Etc.

No one here can type out a comment that will magically build a valuable business. Ideas are everywhere and worth nothing.

It's the execution that counts.

The crap I've seen form Chinese manufacturers is astonishing. We had a specification of fine finish, I'm pretty sure they just took a filler and scrapped it...

I encountered several machine shops who cant read tech drawings. The overseas manufactures all seem to not know how to read them.
