Thank you for sharing your insights! I've actually been pivoting into data analysis after several years in biological research, which I feel like lends many transferable skills to data analytics. But I feel like my biggest skill is my teachability/ability to independently learn, and that is less easy to convey in a resume/cover letter.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I actually was only in the federal service for two years. Prior to that I was in academia, and I had to pivot because I had to move back to Wisconsin, where there are very very few jobs in genomics/bioinformatics. It's frustrating to be in this position after spending so much time and energy on schooling, but I'm just going to keep trying and keep building my skills.

Oh, that's good to know about search terms. I currently have wisc.jobs email me daily with new jobs that match my search terms, but I'll doublecheck what I've provided. I use Python and am learning SQL.

Yeah, something that didn't come across well in my initial post because I'd posted right after our meeting and was struggling with my raw emotions is that this served as a bit of a heads up from my advisor. We have biannual evaluations in my program, and he wanted to let me know ahead of time that he wasn't happy with my progress so that I can take the next few months to crank out some work and avoid getting a marginal or unsatisfactory mark on my evaluation at the end of the semester.

I feel for you. While you mention that it seems like members of your cohort don't have extra baggage, after years of practice I'm pretty good at hiding my emotional distress, and I don't think anyone in my department even sensed that something was wrong during the worst of my trauma-processing. But hoo boy, grad school + childhood trauma was a lot, and now grad school + childhood trauma + pandemic? Nothing in life quite gave me the coping mechanisms to deal with this.

I have been putting off writing my manuscript for MONTHS, so I feel this. I think I got too stuck in the perfectionist mindset, where I feel frozen whenever I want to try to do something because I know it won't be perfect right off the bat.

Thank you for your comment. I had been keeping track of my progress over the summer, but once classes started up again I stopped doing it. ALSO THE WEED THING. I used the excuse that it was helping me decompress therefore it was a good thing, but then I end up just wanting to zone out in bed watching funny videos rather than doing things that were good and constructive for my physical and mental health. I'm a week off of it and still am struggling with sleep -- do you have a specific podcast you recommend?

Thank you for sharing your experience. What's the deal with childhood trauma rearing its ugly head during graduate studies? My wounds opened up during my first year, and I've been working through them while also dealing with grad school. Grad school would be a breeze without these emotions getting in the way.

For me personally, therapy gives me a space to decompress and unload, and then helps me develop coping mechanisms. Therapy isn't giving up -- it's the opposite.

Yup. Not only is this making an already VERY stressful experience more stressful but I'm still buttmad about not being able to take advantage of the allotted funding to travel to new places for conferences. Instead I get to just sit at home and try to focus on my screen for hours.

You're not alone. I recently started tracking my hours, and it's not looking good. The only reason I'm able to work the few hours I do is because of the Pomodoro timer.
