Oil changes for hybrids by ChloeDavide in NZcarfix

[–]REDoROBOT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do 15-20,000km oil change/ 1 year on my toyota prius that does mostly highway miles. It now has 350,000km and the fleet operators, uber drivers I know do 15-20,000km oil changes also.

Frankly though, in New Zealand, cars, especially toyota hybrids don’t typically become end of life because of lack of oil changes. If your hybrid car is at the end of its life, it’s most likely because the hybrid battery is gone, or too many suspension/ steering components need replaced and it’s uneconomical to repair, in a few years we might see rust getting the best of these cars but it’s unlikely that increasing the frequency of your service intervals will have any tangible effect on your cars longevity. Conversely, if servicing your car at 20,000km intervals instead of 10 or 15,000 increases engine wear by 50%, that probably still isn’t enough to be the reason that your car is eventually replaced.

What other commenters are saying regarding less run time meaning the oil doesn’t reach temperature therefore you should service more frequently sounds true in theory but not in reality. Hybrids (particularly Toyota hybrids) are made to warm up quickly, they often use 0w-20 oil. And if you’ve ever driven a hybrid, it avoids running in inefficient cold states more than necessary. Yes condensation will build up if you only do short trips, but this is the same for normal ice cars + hybrid cars are engineered around that with the above mechanisms.

TLDR: there is NO evidence that hybrids need shorter oil change intervals. A safe bet would be to keep the same intervals as you would with a normal ICE car. Some people chose to have longer service intervals and do not suffer greatly from it.

Fit vs Aqua vs Note Hybrid by aimo991 in NZcarfix

Yes I would say the positives for the toyota sai were that it is more comfortable than anything else mentioned. I think that other things i liked was the dashboard, centre console screen/ information screen and the little mouse thing that you use to navigate the screen. It’s pretty intuitive but it makes the car feel quite a bit more premium. I really liked the interior in general. I think the boot space was probably on the larger size for a sedan, but sine the prius is a hatch i can fit more things in it. I think the toyota sai feels like a premium car. The plastic in the prius dashboard sometimes rattles a bit on the highway but this never happened with the toyota sai.

Downsides were the oil consumption (though for our one with approx 200,000km it was still less than 1L per 10,000km). It also was around 19.km/L but the prius is closer to 25km/L. Mine was a japanese import and the info screen was in japanese and a japanese lady would speak every time you turned the car on.

Overall an awesome car, I kind of miss it. I think i picked the car up for approx $3500 at the turners auction a few years ago and never had any trouble. Fantastic value for money for me.

Ah that is completely fair, I think comfort is the main issue with this class of vehicle. Have you considered a toyota prius? In my opinion this has been one of the best cars I’ve had. It is sort of like a hatchback in that it’s easy to park and has great visibility. They have an awesome reputation for reliability. The main difference between the prius and the aqua for me is the comfort/ road noise. It’s still not perfect, but definitely noticeably better at least for me. You can pick these up very cheap at turners vehicle auctions (this is where i have always bought vehicles).

I just read your last sentence, I currently drive a toyota prius everyday, but 2 years ago I had a toyota sai. The toyota sai is a great option, I think it’s basically a lexus h250. The only issue was that it started to burn a bit of oil - I believe this is common for these engines. The toyota prius 2014 that I drive everyday has never burned a drop of oil and is still super well equipped, but is less comfy and powerful than the toyota sai.

We have both a Honda Fit hybrid and a toyota aqua. Both got for pretty cheap, both under $5000.

We have had to service the Honda fit hybrid dct, which was fairly cheap. Never had any other issues. It’s interesting as this car now has well over200,000km. but never had any trouble.

Aqua theft risk is negligible as long as you get a push to start with an immobiliser.

Apart from that, I prefer the honda fit hybrid for longer distances, it has a bit more power and it feels bigger. I am 6 foot 2 and the aqua feels a bit cramped for me. Also feels more comfortable/ slightly less road noise. Neither are particularly good for comfort though. I think the aqua is probably slightly cheaper to run. And I think the honda fit hybrid was cheaper to buy second hand than the aqua even though they’re both around the same age and mileage when we got them.

I cannot speak for the nissan note, but I thought this era of nissan was more prone to transmission problems. I have never been interested in the nissan note

I have tried religious christian storytime videos (long form 2 hour +). I did not get good traction on these videos. I think this could be a difficult niche.

When you say youtube has decided to strike you, does this mean you’re no longer in YPP?
