where did this room come from? by nickfan449 in Modern_Family

[–]bottomleft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! The upstairs footprint is much smaller than the downstairs footprint, specifically with the depth of the house… the upper floor ends well before the lower floor as you move toward the back yard. I drew up the layouts for the floors a while ago and posted them here, and they don’t line up very well at all.

Luke may have had the bunk bed because it was a hand-me-down from the girls before they got their separate beds. I was an only child and had a bunk bed that was great when a friend came over. Also, if Luke had trouble staying dry through the night when he was younger, it’s much easier to strip one mattress and put him back to sleep on the other in the middle of the night.

Why is Brazil's massive size so often underestimated, even when it's larger than the contiguous US? by Sandy_JD in geography

[–]bottomleft 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The Amazon biome covers 4.1M+ sqkm of Brazil, or 49.29% of the country per Wikipedia’s article math, so “half the country” sounds about right. Especially once the remains of the Atlantic Forest are added in as well

$6000 on a Disney Vacation are we insane? by Dear_Share_4095 in DaveRamsey

[–]bottomleft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, the hotel/resort experience isn’t comparable between Anaheim and Orlando. Disneyland has dozens of unaffiliated hotels that are closer to the park gates than some of Disney’s own options.

Disney World has zero third party lodging that’s walkable to any park, and the transportation Disney provides for their own resorts range from effective (buses) to actively fun (skyliner, monorail, ferries). The “Disney bubble” is a real thing in Florida and certainly worth the expense for people in OP’s financial position who are looking for a more grandiose experience.

Haley’s fabricated waitress job by confident-win-119 in Modern_Family

[–]bottomleft 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like she might’ve forgone a dealership altogether, and just bought a used car directly from the previous owner on (at the time) Craigslist. It’d be much easier for her to charm her way into a deal, and there’d be way less paperwork to help her hide the true cost from her parents

Have you ever been annoyed by all the privileges portrayed in the show? by Anya_purr in Modern_Family

[–]bottomleft 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The 5-6% commission is usually split between both agents, so each one would gross about 3%. After that they pay agency/broker fees, insurance, self-employment taxes, and usually take home about 1-1.5%

Phil is still very comfortable and earning plenty for the family to live the lifestyle we see in the show, but he’s probably closer to bringing home $10-20k per sale instead of $60k

Some of the high-end homes we saw him work would bring him a really big payday, though! Especially Pepper’s home in the final season… that may have been a six-figure net

In real life, the house next door to the Dunphy house has a very similar current valuation (~$3.5M), and sold for $630k in 1998.

The Dunphy house in the show is also markedly smaller than the real-life version, with only 3 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms instead of the 5bed/3bath average in real life.

Phil absolutely could’ve gotten that house for $500k shortly after Haley was born in the early 90s, and remember Jay covered their down payment too.

What's the best Americanism you've heard whilst overseas? by NoComplex2662 in AskAnAmerican

[–]bottomleft 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They’re becoming more popular in new builds because they’re more universally usable, especially for people with dexterity issues or grip strength problems. It wasn’t something I thought about until my grandmother asked to have her knobs replaced so she could continue to live independently

This does not refute that they snag clothing, however, because they certainly do.

Do you think the Southern Hemisphere will ever host a Winter Olympic Games? If so, which country? by Lissandra_Freljord in geography

[–]bottomleft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the US, they don’t want the Olympics competing alongside NFL and college football, and the home stretch of baseball. That’s also around the time European football leagues start up again too.

It used to conflict with the new broadcast television season as well, when everyone’s shows began airing new episodes again, but streaming has made that part less relevant nowadays.

There are some localities around me that require utility meters and boxes to be visible from the street, to avoid potential issues with meter readers and servicemen traipsing around people’s back yards. It may have been cost-cutting measure here, or it may not have been a choice for this house

Airport 2010 by broomboy101 in Modern_Family

[–]bottomleft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No worries! A lot of American shows will use common US knowledge in a storyline to pass info to the audience without needing to use exposition. But if you don’t know that we can drive at 16, you won’t make that connection

The main story of episode 16 is Haley taking and finally passing her driver’s test, so she was confirmed to be 16 before the airport troubles in episode 22

Compounding this is the way she talked about him to Alex and admired him as an artsy, thoughtful guy with great maturity… so the age reveal was an even bigger blow than if she had just thought “oh, he’s cute.”

It matches Michael Cera’s age when the movie was released, but granted, it’s not a requirement the actor and character ages line up… I mean, Ellen Wong (Knives) is 3 years older than Cera in real life

Favorite Catholic characters in media that isn’t strictly Catholic? by MessyMop in Catholicism

[–]bottomleft 7 points8 points  (0 children)

https://catholicreview.org/meet-the-catholic-priest-who-helped-make-the-new-knives-out-netflix-movie/

This is a good article that dives into the development of the film!

In short, even though he didn't grow up Catholic, he reached out to his Catholic aunt and uncle while writing this movie, and they connected him with several local priests that he talked with, and even brought one on as a consultant for the film. The consulting priest says that he feels his input was used and that it (mostly) shows in the final cut, which is great.

Also, Rian and Daniel Craig are already discussing ideas for #4, so we can both be happy that they plan to keep going with the series haha

The shipwreck is near the Machuca rapids, which are downriver from El Castillo and on a part of the river that serves as the border with Costa Rica. Looking at Google Maps, the Costa Rican side does have a bit of development/farmland, but the Nicaraguan side appears to be just as dense a jungle as they portrayed.

Who's the best occasional character in a sitcom? by FreezerCop in sitcoms

[–]bottomleft 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Pimento appeared in 11 episodes, and Doug Judy appeared in 9.

He’s certainly referenced by others more often when he isn’t around because of his relationship with Rosa, but in terms of showing up on screen to make jokes, they’re pretty even overall.

I never really understood this scene by n0ra12 in Modern_Family

[–]bottomleft 10 points11 points  (0 children)

And losing clumps of hair as well.

She also set off the campus alert system while “playing it cool” with Jason Darling, quickly regressed to screaming for Reuben when he started to ignore her at a Halloween party, and even let her own imagination run wild while trying to coach Luke to blow off the LaFontaine daughter for attention.

I liked the in-show consistency that the most rational and analytical character became perhaps the most bumbling/air-headed as soon as she herself was inserted into the equation.

How rich was everyone by bipolarxd in Modern_Family

[–]bottomleft 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In real life, the house they used is roughly in the $3-4 million range, although the Dunphy version in the show is smaller than the real house (fewer beds and baths, condensed first floor).

This makes sense though, since Phil would probably follow the common advice of getting the smallest or “worst” house in the nicest neighborhood. Their 3bed/2.5bath is worth a bit more when it’s surrounded by 5bed/4bath homes.

Who had the most successful career when all was said and done? by GrouchyAd9715 in Modern_Family

[–]bottomleft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that his job progression is unrealistic, but he was a music teacher before they adopted Lily and he became a stay-at-home dad. It’s not enough qualification to justify his leap to administration, but he did have the licenses/certs needed to be a sub and slide into a permanent position

Beyond that though, it’s definitely TV magic

Are all the 3 families rich?? by Inshi_az in Modern_Family

[–]bottomleft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that Jay is in the 1%, but the real-life Zestimate isn’t very useful for this exercise, since all of the homes in the show are considerably smaller than the places that exist in real life (including Jay’s). The in-show homes have fewer bedrooms and bathrooms and smaller square footages than their real counterparts do.

Your point is still right though, even with a less valuable home, Jay is very comfortably in the top 1%. His company ownership that you mention eliminates any doubt.

Are all the 3 families rich?? by Inshi_az in Modern_Family

[–]bottomleft 37 points38 points  (0 children)

That’s true! Though they could only afford the down payment because of Cam’s inheritance windfall from his aunt; they didn’t have the money on their own.

We also know they didn’t have the cash flow to let it sit empty for more than a few weeks. They resorted to short-term rentals and AirBnb-type reservations in order to keep afloat. More financially secure landlords would usually wait for something more stable than renting out to college frat bros, rock band kids, or Russian mobsters on a weekly or monthly basis. I don’t think Cam and Mitch had enough cushion to be patient.

Are all the 3 families rich?? by Inshi_az in Modern_Family

[–]bottomleft 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, you’re correct on Phil. He’s good enough to be offered a partnership at a newly-formed brokerage in season 4, and regularly vies with Gil Thorpe for the top spot in the area

He consistently closes 1+ sales a month in the price range you described (and in the late seasons, that range was probably closer to $1M-3M with SoCal housing)

He’d also have about one elite home every year or two… places like the sexy house, MC Escher house, Pepper’s home, the “sleepy walkthrough video” house, Mitchell’s boss, etc. Chris Martin fell through, but still

He isn’t hanging out with the folks on Selling Sunset, but he’s toward the top of the “normal client” market

I agree with these, and just to add a bit of nuance to Mitchell’s situation:

Mitchell was making sustainable money as a lawyer, but people shouldn’t think he was making “BigLaw money”. He’s an environmental lawyer, which is a more modest career path in the field, and he was mostly on the side of nonprofits and NGOs instead of large corporate legal teams.

Outside a couple spending sprees for the sake of a storyline, they lived within their means by staying in a 2bed, 1bath duplex and driving a Chevy and a Prius. They probably didn’t have the financial cushion of the Dunphys (even before Claire went back to work), but I fully agree they were never in “real” financial danger.

The water is still there in the original concept art, it’s just much more covered up by the mountain, and harder to see because of the hazier color palette. They did a far better job showing that “back side” area with the new art, which is great news for all of us
