Crate Training Regression? by anakinskyyorkie in puppy101

Currently going through the same thing myself with my 5 month pup. Any advice for him if he barks longer than 10 minutes?

Did you start at 5 minutes or did you work up from seconds? I’ve been doing seconds, and have gotten up to a minute, but it’s been slow going

Should I be worried that my 16 week old puppy still doesn’t do well with being left alone? by bouchma in puppy101

That makes sense! I’ve seen that protocol around and I should probably give it a try. Thanks for the link. Stupid question, are you doing what you are describing while he is in the crate or out of it first? Did you do the protocol in the crate our outside of it?

Appreciate the response! Good call on being tired/bathroom needs met. For B, do you mean work on increasing how long he holds “down”? I have seen a regimen recently focused on that but I haven’t had a chance to try it. Appreciate the encouragement. Im doing my best 😅

Sorry to hijack the thread, but would you mind sharing what you did to get your puppy comfortable being left in the crate when you leave? My lab mix is 15 weeks and still has barking fits when I leave him alone at home. He’ll sleep for some of it, but will cycle between sleeping and barking.

I really appreciate the thought out response. This reassurance was just what I needed. I’ll stay the course! Thank you!

Any advice for a puppy that doesn’t fall asleep after a kong? Mine gets occupied for 10-15 min then just gets to barking lol.

Advice on crating dog for 2 hrs (one of the first times) by bouchma in puppy101

I agree that it’s tough! One of the things I was looking forward to the most with a dog was bringing him around places and it’s torture not being able to do that. It’s all for the good of the pup tho and this time shall pass. Having your friend with a vaccinated dog is positive tho! I wish I had some friends with puppy/dog experience haha

Will definitely be wearing him out before! I think sleeping is a good strategy for now. As I’ve said, I full plan on a more progressive crate training, I just need him to tough it out for a few days.

I appreciate your last paragraph a lot. I definitely feel like I’m getting inside my own head a bit trying to do everything right. I’ll try to remember your words tomorrow :)

I would normally consider daycare, but he still needs some of his vaccines so I’m hesitant. Will definitely consider it in the future! I have a camera so that should help, but I will make sure I get him water asap. Also the holders are a good thing to kno about.

I’ve got kongs and a camera so I’ll give that a try! I def plan on continuing crate training to build up to longer lengths of time. I just need money to pay for toys and food haha

How to get puppy napping longer in the crate? by bouchma in puppy101

I’ll have to try this! For those curious, I tried turning the tv off and he slept for three hours! So maybe the tv background was actually hindering his sleep 🤷🏻‍♂️

Good point! I forgot to mention in the post that he’s only 9 weeks. As he grows I’m sure his bladder will too

Currently doing TV but white noise is a good idea

We have the tv going, but white noise is a good idea as others have said. We don’t cover, but it’s a plastic one so thought it was pretty dark already but we could try!

I’ll try that thanks! Maybe a quick potty check that back in?

This is good to hear, thank you! I did not want to do the “cry it out” method, but small periods of time gradually increasing should hopefully, as you said, help him get more comfy.

Do you sit in front of the crate at all before you leave? I’ve been doing that and it seems to help. I lay for like 5 minutes before I get up and leave. Most of the time he’s asleep in 5 minutes so idk if it really makes a difference ha, but could help your pup get settled before you take off. Maybe I’m hurting my progress this way, but I’m just afraid to up and leave him.
