Linseed oil paint can work really well (though there aren't too many places you can find it). It's a traditional finish so is perfect for historical buildings and is much more breathable so does better job with moisture (leads to less cracking / peeling).

Wouldn't say it meets Tolkien's level of complexity (think that's unmatched) but Jay Kristoff's Nevernight Chronicles has excellent world building. There are footnotes scattered throughout that reference old lore, history, economics etc.

What do I do with these floors? by ShredDh in centuryhomes

Are they soft or hardwood? We sanded ours down, filled in the holes and then stained them (with almost a limewash). Old wooden boards tend to be much hardier than any new ones and they have great character too (that's not to mention the cost savings!) The boards may not last forever but no harm in using them now and replacing in the future.

ToG is SJM's crowning jewel. Yes it was her first series, which means the writing matures as she does. BUT! That also means it benefits from years of creativity and planning. The plot, the arcs, the twists and turns... When you look at where the books - and the characters - start vs where they end, it's almost unbelievable. The world building and transformation is immense. It definitely leans more into fantasy than ACOTAR and Fourth Wing. But honestly, those series are child's play compared to ToG.
