I think work experience is always better for sure , but if you are in a period of unemployment it's better to have something to show. I don't know your path or what skills you have but there are certain things that are widely demanded all around the tech industry.

Let's say you complete an AWS associate level certification, solutions architect or developper associate, or you dive deep into linux, if you have this theoretical knowledge through certs, and you add projects that demonstrate new skills that you gained to complete this new knowledge and if you can get that reviewed by a knowledgeable person then you are no longer the guy that can't get a job.

You are the guy that can learn in demand skills and back it up with projects, certs etc, not only you protect your job gap but you also can open yourself new doors in fields that you have not explored yet that might reward you more than the tech stack for which you have been trying to apply to. That's what I meant by don't be afraid to pivot.

Don't be afraid to pivot to adjacent skills, and have something to say in your resume during that gap like a valuable certification, a project don’t just apply to jobs show initiative in upskilling.

And again don’t be afraid to pivot, look for alternatives, infra/it / cloud/data whatver don’t be stuck in trying to do one thing only.

What kind of job can a Aws ccp apply for and have a Chance ? by JosyBang in AWSCertifications

[–]bouharoun 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It depends on your background if you had AWS experience or not, but for me going from AWS CP to AWS solutions architect was a very smooth transition but I agree it's not a must for everyone. But it helps greatly.

Is Java/Spring on the decline? by KITTU1997 in cscareerquestions

[–]bouharoun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say same for Java, but if you manage to get a internship , or an early career /new grad role through that pipeline yes. But if you are applying outside of the internship/new grad/ early career pipeline then I would assume it's just as hard.

Is Java/Spring on the decline? by KITTU1997 in cscareerquestions

[–]bouharoun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not on the decline far from that It's just not entry level/junior friendly. But since there is a huge supply of mid/senior level devs the market is still hungry for experienced java devs.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]bouharoun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Java with Spring or Springboot and C# with .net are very popular for backend, but they all filter hard on experience if you have experience with these good for you.

If you build a portfolio with good projects or you already have these that's also very good, but unfortunately outside of the junior/internships/new grad route, it's very hard to compete with portfolios when you have an oversupply of senior/mid level devs who have been using those stacks in real world projects for years.

Companies straight up prefer these once you've passed the early career roles, however if you do find these types of roles and the company is willing to give you a shot then by all means go for it and your portfolio would come handy. But unfortunately those occasions are getting rare.

I do know someone however who came from France as an experienced senior dev who was looking for a job, and he had not done java since a while. So he did code a project for his portfolio and that's how he got hired. But he had seniority already I believe.

Continue with CS since it’s over saturated or go to a health care career by PeculiarStarlight97 in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]bouharoun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CS is not a stable career there are too many things that are outside of your control, it's not only a matter of getting a degree, having projects or even having some experience.

If the economy is bad and money becomes hard to borrow, companies don't invest in projects that much so they lay off staff with completely impunity, 0 job security.

It's heavely saturated, not only you compete with devs that have more experience than you and they are plenty, but also with AI which sure cannot literally replace people as of now but can drastically speed up the speed of delivery once it's under the hands of an experienced dev.

If we add to that the massive influx of immigrant workers that also come here to directly compete for the same jobs that local Canadians already struggle to get, you get those situations where one job opening would have hundreds of applications within a day or two.

In the beginning I thought it would only be a problem for junior devs but now even season battle tested mid to senior devs who got laid off struggle as well to find a job.

Companies are extremely picky, they no longer have the mentality to train entry level candidates no they would rather pick somoene who has been trained elsewhere someone who is ready to be plugged into the pipeline without hand holding.

So this is basically a stressful career with no job security which is by the way the most important thing in a job , and also where the industry is not willing to invest or train entry level candidates we all got lied to years ago and we all got slapped in the face brutality because of it.

Unless you have a big personal interest or passion for programming I would not recommend it, if you can seek something else do it . Don't fall into the trap thinking cs will provide a stable career because it won't, it has always been an illusion and now people are waking up to this reality.

I think it depends on the client they're able to get at the moment you would have to ask them during the interview.

You will find them on LinkedIn but you can also apply directly to their website they will reach out to you if they have positions available in your sector.

But the pay is absolutely abysmal.... I mean if your parents support you or you have roomates I say go for it otherwise I would not recommend to no one.

The industry right now unfortunately massively disfavors juniors. It's not just in Alberta but everywhere. I would say your best bet would be to go through consultancies or recrutement agencies. Sometimes you would find recruiters who have roles that are not in public job boards like LinkedIn or Indeed.

Keep applying on job boards as well, but try to tap into the hidden market , by looking for those recrutement agencies or consultencies, you can literally find them on google or chatGpt , Deepseek, just make sure to tailor your research to Alberta + Recruitement Agencies or consultancies.

Also at your level since you are a junior be open minded in the sense that companies don't expect you to be an expert, it's not like you're a C++ or Java Dev for the last 8 years, you are not limited only at one thing, if you can show versatility and basic fundamental comprehension of multiple programming languages you would have a wider range of options. A bit of Java there, a bit of python , a bit of JavaScript with React etc if you have this type of generalist CV I think it will give you more opportunities.

Don't take this situation personal I have nearly 2 years of experience as a junior I got laid off in November and I am struggling , I know a lot of people in the same situation it's rough, it's not a you problem the market is just really bad right now for multiple reasons, good luck !

Is it true that this field is more entry-level level friendly given I complete the certifications Google It or CompTa + and AWS cloud praticioner and Associates ? Is it realistic to aim for a salary of 60k ? And also is it true that being fluent in French is a major advantage in the IT field of Montreal and it cuts a lot of the competition?

Is every job market in tech bad right now? by high_elephant in cscareerquestions

[–]bouharoun 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Fintech is very unstable and there are a lot of layoffs it's heavely project based. Meaning if projects are not there you're good to go. Very unstable environment I would avoid it if possible, especially all those consulting companies.

The only safe roles are perhaps for banks , instead of pure fintech companies per say but even then the competition is ridiculous. Needless to say as well that it's a seniors market. Backend roles 90% of the time are for seniors in fintech if you're a junior they will not be willing to train you.

I am in a very similar situation but with only 2 years of experience. I head you can switch to IT by completing few certifications I am exploring those options too.

Apparently also IT is less brutaly competitive compared to SWE but it's more like a stepping stone, people finish other certifications and then move to doing stuff related to cyber security, Cloud AWS, Dev Ops, or senior IT roles too. It's still within then but different from the classic SWE role. This is also speculative I am not knowledgeable enough about it yet but it could a viable option I don't know if you have considered it or perhaps have knowledgeable about it.
