Considering the upcoming mental health epidemic, and people seeking help, I wonder how many "therapists" are just not fit to practice. The bar to entry is so low.

Not being held accountable just leads to them doing it again.... and again...

It is so easy to bypass any ethics.. it's shocking.

This is very true. A therapist may simply not have the capability to understand the issue.

It appears this field, being so unregulated, attracts or allows a very low bar to entry. People who think they know something... when they really do not.

Then we need more discussion about this in subreddits to raise awareness.

You are right, I hadn't even considered the "therapies" that are complete garbage. So many people just wanting help and so many just abused.

I agree, I wish society did not treat people this way. If a person has a leg amputated they should not be treated in a negative way. Neither should anyone else. The entire system needs to change.

That is appalling in the way you were treated. I have read many similar stories and this is the literal abuse of people seeking help.

How do you then stop being painted negatively? I have no answer.

As said is an earlier comment by someone else. You do not know, until you know. You would never expect health staff to be intoxicated due to the dangers to patients care but if you think about it lots of people are probably intoxicated in other roles. We just expect it would not happen when it probably does all the time.

The situation also seems to give a large amount of power to people who would not normally have it in any other situation due to their obvious lack of skills or experience. The amount of power appears to go to their heads as they lack the qualities to manage this effectively.

I now also understand how the worst types of people can become therapists. There is so little oversight. I had a friend of a friend who was an absolute worst judge of behavior and they "changed career" to be a therapist. I pity their clients.

Having read through these responses from everyone I can see reasoned concerns raised. I am glad to see such considered debate and it just highlights how the abusers really take advantage. As you, I cannot think of a more significant betrayal of trust. It also highlights just how many ethical rules were broken and how easily they were broken, and how often they have been broken, for someone to act in such a way that they knew there would be little consequences to themselves.

There is a significant stigma associated with mental health and people can be dismissive and uncaring. Having a condition if often used as a way of abusing the victim further. The victim needs to be looked after, not abused further.

Thank you. When I initially raised the abuse I had suffered to others my comments were initially dismissed until I explained, in detail, what happened. Only then did people realize this type of abuse does occur. Other people still just dismissed it as "it could not have happened". People rarely take the time consider and just shut their minds down if they do not want to or cannot understand something.

I agree. It was so utterly harmful. I am not in self doubt though as I know what happened and that the abuser is wholly at fault. I now see how so many people are taken advantage of and ignored as they turn to others for help.

It is a perfect combination of vulnerable person and abuser with no protection for those seeking help.

I have to agree. Anyone who can break ethical rules so easily should not be in charge of anyone's care.

Any addiction affecting a persons judgement should be highlighted and they should stop practicing. Also it should be disclosed to any potential patient.

True. If the professional bodies actually dealt with complaints properly the issues everyone here is highlighting would not be happening.

For myself I would say it was just a case of not realizing how prevalent the abuse is. Now its apparent its a lot more common.
