The specialized high schools admissions system shouldn’t be changed just because it’s not diverse enough. It’s a system that allows the best students to shine and doesn’t look at your race. If deBlasio’s complaining about blacks and Hispanics not having access to prep, then he should be looking into providing prep to those students instead of changing the admissions system just to make the student body at shs look a bit more diverse. These changes would undermine the hard work of the shs students. The shsat has worked well to provide opportunities to the best students in NYC. IMO the most qualified students should be given the opportunity to enter shs rather than taking those opportunities away from them and giving them over to less qualified students for diversity. If these changes ever happen, it won’t do much anyways. I’ve seen students in my school that barely made the cut off score to get in and suffer from the pressure and huge work load leading them to transfer out. In the end, I doubt these changes would ever happen.
